Central Florida Ophthalmology (CFO) is a premier, top-tier ophthalmology practice offering cataract surgery, cornea treatment, glaucoma management, and more. From the office in Oviedo, Florida, founder Dr. Jeffrey R. Golen, MD, and the team specialize in comprehensive ophthalmology to provide their patients with the best eye care possible.
Dr. Golen is originally from the metropolitan Detroit area of Michigan, and has always loved science. Throughout his adolescence, he was particularly attracted to biology and was torn between becoming a scientist or a physician. He notes that the building of community and daily interaction with patients pointed him toward medicine rather than scientific research.
Attending the University of Notre Dame on a full-ride ROTC scholarship, Dr. Golen graduated and fulfilled his military obligation as a United States Army Captain in the Ohio National Guard while earning his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine. He moved to Tampa, Florida, for his ophthalmology residency at the University of South Florida. After residency graduation, Dr. Golen completed a cornea fellowship at the F.I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Prior to moving back to Florida for private practice, Dr. Golen was on faculty at the University of Virginia for three years as an ophthalmologist, cornea specialist, cornea and cataract surgeon, and assistant residency program director. At UVA, Dr. Golen treated complex cataracts, severe traumas, advanced infections, and congenital eye disorders. Given the severe disease state of some of the cornea cases, he even implanted multiple Boston Keratoprosthesis corneal transplants, a part prosthetic, part biologic artificial cornea.
Now in private practice at Central Florida Ophthalmology (CFO) in Oviedo, FL, Dr. Golen and his team treat various eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, pterygium, diabetic eye disease, and corneal pathology. The team’s specialization and expertise in general ophthalmological care provide the foundation of optimal eye health for their patients.
Dr. Golen is a lifelong athlete, as well as a health and fitness fan. You will often hear him discussing lifestyle optimization with his patients, with the goal of improving overall health and wellbeing. He enjoys reading nonfiction books, weight training, sports of every variety, live music, and especially outdoor activities. His favorite activity is spending time with his wife and two children.
