In the past seven years, I have had the honor of working in a wellness center, a detox facility and a non-profit community clinic. It has given me the opportunity to work with people in chronic pain, acute detox and those needing support for their mental and emotional health. Chris Metro, ND, MSOM, LAc, is a naturopathic physician bringing his interest in natural, nutritional, and herbal medicine to the Portland Clinic of Holistic Health. Serving patients of all ages in Downtown Portland, Oregon, Dr. Metro has a focused interest in addiction treatment and infectious diseases.
Dr. Metro earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and gained specialized knowledge in silicate, chlor-alkali, and petroleum-based derivatives while working for Occidental Chemical Corporation in Dallas, Texas. During his career at Occidental Chemical Corporation, he also pursued his interest in natural medicine by completing initial course work at the New England School of Homeopathy in Amherst, Massachusetts.
He then engaged in further study at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he completed his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. Dr. Metro worked with Professor Heiner Fruehauf, founder of the Classical Chinese medicine department at the National College of Natural Medicine, to create an online film archive of interviews and lectures from experts in mainland China.
Dr. Metro gained clinical experience in addiction treatment and infectious diseases through several internship programs throughout Portland, Oregon, with the Portland Alternative Health Center, De Paul Treatment Youth Center, and Outside In and Dignity Village. He later developed interest and experience with difficult and recalcitrant diseases at the Immune Enhancement Program of the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Metro traveled and studied throughout China, working with several well-known and respected professors, including the Daoist elder Professor Wang Quingyu of the Sichuan Academy of Cultural History and Professor Liu Lihong of Guangxi Institute for Research and Preservation of Classical Chinese Medicine.
David Chang, ND, LAc, is a board-certified naturopathic physician and acupuncturist at Open Wellness PDX in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Chang has extensive experience providing primary care, chronic pain management, and traditional Chinese medicine services.
Dr. Chang was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and he spent part of his childhood there before relocating to beautiful Ashland, Oregon, and then to Portland. He completed his medical education at the National University of Natural Medicine, and then went on to pursue clinical training under the guidance of fellow physician, Dr. Ilana Gurevich.
In addition to his six-year training in natural medicine, Dr. Chang has specialized training in therapies like prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), cold laser therapy, restorative cell therapy, and perineural injections.
As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Chang considers your whole-body health before recommending treatment plans. Through holistic care, his goal is to address his patients’ underlying conditions rather than treating just the symptoms.
Dr. Chang has been an athlete his whole life, so he understands how patients may feel when they’re unable to perform the activities that they love and be active. Dr. Kate Leavens is a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist. She earned a doctorate in naturopathic medicine and a masters in acupuncture with a Chinese herbal medicine specialization from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. She is a first year resident working with Dr. Ilana Guervich.
While Dr. Leavens’ training has focused on primary care, she has also completed more extensive training in gastroenterology, endocrinology, and women’s health. She is certified in pelvic floor therapy as well as somatic dialogue and has continued training in craniosacral therapy from UpLedger Institute. By integrating naturopathic philosophy, conventional medical tools, and Chinese medicine modalities, she is excited to offer a holistic and individualized approach to each and every patient.
