As a junior and senior, she helped devise a system to diagnose illnesses using the human breath utilizing a spectrophotometer. She then went on to graduate medical school from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. Following medical school, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1990.
