Dr. Nelson grew up in the Puget Sound area and was an honors and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Washington. He went to medical school at the University of Southern California and completed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at USC-L.A. County Hospital Medical Center where he was elected chief resident. After residency, Dr. Nelson completed fellowship training in interventional pain medicine. He then started the Pain Management program at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California.
After returning to the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Nelson joined the Evergreen Hospital medical staff and founded the Pain Medicine department there, as well as establishing one of the first full-spectrum independent pain medicine clinics in the area. He is a founding member and Director-at-Large of the Washington Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Alan Chen, MD, MS, is a non-surgical interventionalist in the spine division at Cascade Orthopedics in Auburn and Bonney Lake, Washington. He is a double-board certified physician in pain management and physical medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Chen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1996 from Tufts University in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. In 1998, he received his master's degree in physiology from Chicago Medical School Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, Illinois. Two years later, he completed his doctoral degree.
Dr. Chen completed his residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at New York Medical College, St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan, New York, where he finished as Chief Resident. Afterward, he specialized further in interventional pain management at UCLA with fellowship training. He is also an accredited medical acupuncturist.
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Chen enjoys fishing, camping, golf, painting, and spending time with his wife and two sons.
