Dr. John Thoppil founded and leads River Place OB/GYN. He is nationally known and has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CBS national news, and many state publications such as the Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly.
Clinically he is a pioneer in the field. He was the first in Texas to perform in-office uterine removal (MYOSURE) and the first in the state to perform the SONATA procedure in the office for the treatment of fibroids.
He has among the lowest cesarean section rates in the state (NTSV rate for 2022 11%). Our practice routinely takes care of high-risk women, including older mothers and fertility patients.
Dr. Thoppil is a leader in the field. He is a past President of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is the current Department Chair of Ob/Gyn at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, the busiest maternity hospital in Central Texas.
Dr.Thoppil completed his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University and his medical degree at the Baylor College of Medicine, one of the premier medical schools in the country. He did his OB/GYN training at the Air Force’s flagship medical center, Wilford Hall, at Lackland AFB. Dr. Thoppil served his country as a physician in the Air Force prior to returning to his home state of Texas in 2008.

Mahta Rouhani, MD, is a caring and compassionate women’s health practitioner who believes strongly that every woman deserves access to top-quality care. She started with Ob North and is proud to join the Pflugerville/River Place Ob-Gyn team.
Education has always been a guiding force in Dr. Rouhani’s life. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas (UT) in Austin. She then earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) at Galveston before completing her residency at Houston Methodist Obstetrics and Gynecology in Texas.

Dr. Jonathan Pepper brings with him a passion for women’s health and is excited to join Pflugerville/River Place OB/GYN. He gladly sees patients of all ages and is experienced with a diverse range of pathology. In addition to clinical obstetrics and gynecology services, he provides minimally invasive gynecologic surgical services including sterilization procedures, uterine cavity procedures, myomectomies, hysterectomies, and other adnexal surgery.
Originally from the greater New Orleans area, he carries a vibrant energy and an inviting demeanor. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Engineering from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Seeking an opportunity to impact others more directly, he pursued a career in medicine and received his MD from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. He subsequently completed his OB/GYN training at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in McAllen, Texas. His love for Texas blossomed during his time in residency, which ultimately drew him to this great city of Austin.
Influenced by strong women throughout his life, Dr. Pepper gravitated toward the field of obstetrics and gynecology. He holds a collaborative approach to care and works to create customized plans to ensure that his patients’ needs are met. As part of his goal to improve healthcare outcomes, he stays current with OB/GYN advancements and regularly incorporates them into his practice. He strives to eliminate the healthcare inequities women have traditionally faced in medicine and is a firm women’s health advocate. He works diligently to ensure that each patient receives compassionate care with the dignity and respect they each deserve.
Dr. Pepper is an engaging physician who truly cares about his patients; someone who takes the time to ensure that each one of their needs are met. Tyler D. Handcock, MD, is a board-certified OB/GYN at Women's Health Domain in Austin, Texas. He’s one of Austin Monthly Magazine Top Doctors, receiving the honor every year since 2017.
After completing his Bachelor of Science in chemistry at South Dakota School Mines and Technology in Rapid City, South Dakota, Dr. Handcock went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in Vermillion, South Dakota.

After completing her Bachelor of Science in Human Biology with a concentration in social aspects of health and disease in 2006 from The University of Texas-Austin, Dr. Boswell went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 2010. Dr. Boswell then completed her OB/GYN residency in 2014 at University of Texas-Dell program in Austin. Amy M. Chapman, MD, MBA, is a highly experienced board-certified OB/GYN at Women's Health Domain in Austin, Texas. Dr. Chapman has been recognized by her peers as a Top Doc 2020 and 2022 in Austin Monthly Magazine.
Dr. Chapman earned her Bachelor of Arts in zoology at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin in Austin, Texas. She then graduated, with honors, with her Doctor of Medicine, from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, and was one of the top 10 students in her medical class. During medical school she earned membership into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Hambrock-McGanity Award in OB/GYN. Continuing her training in Texas, Dr. Chapman completed her OB/GYN residency at Baylor Scott and White Health (BSW) in Temple, Texas. Elliot Groff, DO is an OB/GYN at Women’s Health Domain in Austin Texas. He has special interests in robotic surgery as well as other minimally invasive techniques in gynecologic care in addition to his interest in general obstetrics.
Growing up in the San Antonio area, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio prior to moving to Glendale, Arizona for a Masters in Biomedical Science as well as his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine. He and his wife, Kristy, then moved to Pensacola, Florida where he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology through the University of Florida at Ascension Sacred Heart. There he learned to champion his patients and work through often complex medical issues with patience and understanding. During his residency, he earned the award for Outstanding Resident in Gynecologic Oncology from the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.
He holds a Texas Medical license and is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Groff enjoys spending time with his wife Kristy and their two cats. He and Kristy are avid foodies, often found seeking the best coffee and food Austin has to offer. With a passion for cycling and the outdoors, Dr. Groff is active in the Austin cycling community.

Her vast wealth of knowledge and experience in obstetrics allow her to care for high-risk, complicated pregnancies and routine pregnancies alike. Her approach to fertility is to make an individualized plan of care for each patient, and she loves the continuity in taking care of the same patient throughout the fertility and pregnancy journey. Dr. Anderson is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where she received her Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Plan II Liberal Arts and Spanish with a concentration in premedical studies, graduating with High Honors. She moved to Dallas to attend medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where she was honored with the Excellence in Medical Student Teaching award in 2005, 2007, and 2008. She then practiced as an Assistant Professor of OB/Gyn in the UT Southwestern – St. Paul OB/MFM private practice. After three years, she returned to her true home, Austin, with her husband Matt and joined Austin Area OB/Gyn.
Seven years later, Dr. Anderson and her husband are rooted as permanent Austinites and love exploring the city with their two dogs, a black Labrador and a miniature red dachshund. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, live music, spending time with friends and family, and the occasional wiener dog race.

Dr. Garcia is thrilled to return home to Austin with her husband and son and plans to build her practice by providing excellent care while fostering a relationship with her patients that is based on trust. Dr. Kathryn M. Landherr is a gifted obstetrician, serving women from in and around Austin, Texas, at Austin Area OB/GYN and Fertility. She helps women throughout their pregnancies, maintaining the health of both the mother and child.
Dr. Landherr grew up in Central Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin for her undergraduate degree in journalism and pre-med. She began medical school at UTMB, went on to graduate from Texas A&M Health Science Center, then on to the University of Oklahoma for her residency program.
Once Dr. Landherr’s residency program was complete she was off to Tucson as an attending physician teaching residents at OU. While at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, she was honored as Section Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2008 – 2010. She also completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine with Andrew Weil, M.D. at the University of Arizona where she learned how to help women achieve optimal health throughout every cycle of life.
After spending 12 years in Tucson, an amazing opportunity became available to come back “home” to the Austin area, where most of her family resides, and to join the award-winning team of physicians at Austin Area OB/GYN and Fertility.
Dr. Landherr is thrilled to have the opportunity to raise her four children amongst family in the beautiful hill country that she has always called home. Dr. Marco Uribe’s gynecological practice at Austin Area OB/GYN focuses on preventive care, preconceptual counseling, infertility, menopause, and the diagnosis and management of pelvic prolapse and urinary incontinence. This includes urodynamic testing to better determine the specific causes of voiding dysfunction. He has also been working with bio identical hormone therapy for over 20 years, and focuses on replacement therapy that helps restore a woman’s hormone balance with the intent of achieving a better quality of life.
Dr. Uribe has an interest in both high-risk and low risk obstetrics. He has also had extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery including performing complex procedures with hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, which significantly reduce postoperative recovery time.
He is assisted in his office practice by his physician assistant Amy Grove, who is a graduate of Medical College of Georgia. Amy has a special interest in polycystic ovarian syndrome and infertility. His practice is also complemented by his NP/CNM Natalie Carreras who trained at Emory University. Natalie has a special interest in bio identical hormone replacement therapy.
Dr. Marco Uribe is a native of Laredo, Texas where he grew up as the only son among seven sisters. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University. He obtained his Medical Doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals in Houston where he served as Chief Resident. He began his practice at AAOBGYN in 1994 after spending several years at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston where he served as Assistant Chief of OB/GYN.
Dr. Uribe is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is also a member of the Texas Medical Society, the Travis County Medical Society, and a number of specialty related organizations. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Physician Distribution and Healthcare Access Committee of the TMA. He has held a clinical faculty position at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and he has received numerous faculty of the year teaching awards for surgical instructional training. His clinical skills have been recognized by numerous organizations and periodicals including Austin Monthly, Austin Fit, and Texas Monthly.
He and his wife Melissa have a very close knit family. He enjoys raising horses, ranching, fishing, and watching his sons participate in numerous sports activities.

Dr. Esfandiari received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry and Spanish from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and was awarded a full academic scholarship. She spent two summers studying at Oxford University in England and received her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where she was awarded the Martin Luther King Service Award for chairing a community health fair. She completed her residency training at Parkland Hospital where she was elected by her peers and faculty to serve as Chief Resident in her final year. Dr Esfandiari has a passion for service and has traveled to Mexico and Nicaragua to provide care for rural, underprivileged areas.
Dr. Esfandiari believes in taking the time to listen to her patients, addressing all concerns. She believes that communication is the key to building lifelong relationships with her patients, emphasizing care and compassion. She has recently "been on the other side" going through IVF and pregnancy herself and has a whole new perspective and empathy.

Dr. Cowan Joined Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fertility in 2000 and has helped women in and around Austin, Texas to find improved health and deliver healthy, happy babies by providing high quality gynecological and obstetric services.
Dr. Cowan is a native of Hillsboro, Texas and completed his undergraduate work in biology at the University of Texas in 1987.He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. His residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in 1995, where he was chief resident.
He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.He is a member of the Texas Medical Association and past President of the Travis County Medical Society and past board member of the Blood and Tissue Center in Austin. Dr. Cowan serves on numerous committees for the University of Texas including Chancellors Council, the Briscoe Center for American History and College of Natural Sciences Advisory Counsel.
Dr. Cowan is a popular physician in the community and has been a speaker for women’s issues many times. He is a frequent guest on television and radio programs. He and his wife Julie have three children, Rob, Will and Katie.
Julia Gutierrez, MD, is an OB/GYN in Austin, Texas, who enjoys building meaningful and lifelong relationships with her patients at Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Fertility.
Dr. Gutierrez is a native to Austin who is happy to serve the wonderful community. She completed her liberal medical education degree at Brown University, the only Ivy League school offering a dual program for undergraduate education and medical studies. She then went on to receive her doctorate in medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
After graduating, she joined a residency program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. During her time there, she was honored with the “Outstanding Senior Resident Award” and “Academic Excellence Award” for the highest average CREOG Score (annual in-training exam for residents).
At Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Fertility, Dr. Gutierrez provides gynecology services from adolescence through adulthood and beyond. She believes that gynecology and obstetrics is not only a profession, but an honor to connect with patients and help them with their unique health needs. Through mindful and compassionate care, she always aims to deliver personable patient experiences.
In her free time, Dr. Gutierrez loves to spend quality time with her family, exploring Austin and its beauty, and traveling with her husband.
Meena Aserlind, MD, is an experienced OB/GYN serving patients at Austin Area Ob-Gyn & Fertility in Texas. At the practice, Dr. Aserlind emphasizes building relationships with her patients and empowering them to make informed decisions regarding their care.
Dr. Aserlind grew up in South Carolina and received her Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from Clemson University in South Carolina. She then earned her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston.
After graduating from MUSC, she completed a four-year OB/GYN residency at the University of Miami in Florida, where she won the Helen Lansman Award, given to the resident showing the greatest compassion towards patients. After residency, she practiced in the Salt Lake City area for five years before relocating to Texas.
Dr. Aserlind enjoys caring for women at every point of their lives, from adolescence to post-menopausal care. She’s also passionate about infertility care, as she struggled with fertility herself and knows how life-altering a condition it can be.
Dr. Aserlind visited Austin, Texas, with her husband seven years ago for vacation and decided it was her dream city. When the opportunity presented for her to move, she and her husband jumped. They are now joined by their first child, a son born in May 2023.
Outside of work, Dr. Aserlind enjoys all outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and water sports. She and her husband are avid travelers and enjoy learning about new places and cultures.
Dr. Aserlind is very excited to be the newest member of Austin Area Ob-Gyn & Fertility. She looks forward to providing individualized, high-quality, and compassionate care to her new patients.
