Signature Retina Consultants is proud to offer expert retina care to adults in Braidwood, Illinois. Sumit Bhatia, MD, the lead ophthalmologist, has more than 15 years of experience as a retina specialist, and he’s passionate about providing patients with state-of-the-art, personalized treatments.
Dr. Bhatia grew up in Central Illinois and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, graduating magna cum laude with honors.
Dr. Bhatia completed his medical degree and ophthalmology residency at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. During this time, Dr. Bhatia discovered his interest in retinal disorders.
He went on to Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, to continue his studies with a surgical and medical retina fellowship. Dr. Bhatia and his family happily then returned to Central Illinois in 2007, where he’s practiced since then.
Dr. Bhatia utilizes the most advanced laser treatments and diagnostic tests to improve vision. He treats a variety of retinal concerns and conditions like loss of vision, floaters, retinal detachment and tears, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion.
Blurry vision or sudden loss of vision can be alarming, but Dr. Bhatia is communicative and has an excellent bedside manner. He works with patients to identify the cause of any vision issues and develops a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs.
Dr. Bhatia has extensive experience with sutureless vitrectomy and microsurgical techniques for macular surgery. He takes a special interest in the latest pharmacological treatments for age-related macular degeneration, which can cause patients to have trouble reading or seeing curbs when driving.

Daniel Tepper, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and practices comprehensive ophthalmology with a focus on advanced cataract surgery and the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. He sees patients at Wicker Park Eye Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Tepper received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in the biological sciences from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He then completed his medical training in 1991 at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, where he graduated with honors and was recognized for his clinical research in ophthalmology.
After completing his ophthalmology residency at Tulane, Dr. Tepper was invited to join the school’s medical staff, where he taught surgical skills to ophthalmology residents. In 1997, he returned to practice in his hometown of Chicago.
Dr. Tepper is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He actively supports the Blind Service Association as a prior board member and has several society memberships, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology, and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.
Since his teenage years, Dr. Tepper has been an avid proponent of utilizing proper nutrition and fitness to prevent disease, and he frequently integrates nutritional information into the care of his patients.

Michael J. Shapiro, MD, was born in Chicago and is a retina specialist at Retina Consultants Ltd., with offices in Des Plaines, Libertyville, Elgin, Lisle, Hickory Hills and Wilmette, Illinois. He has over 35 years of experience and is affiliated with numerous hospitals, including Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge, IL.
Dr. Shapiro’s areas of special expertise include pediatric retina, complex retinal detachment, genetic retinal detachment syndromes, coloboma, retinoblastoma, retinal surgery, eye pain, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, vitrectomy, and macular degeneration. Dr. Shapiro spent 17 years as full-time faculty at UIC. He was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, and Director of the Eye Trauma Services and Retinoblastoma treatment group at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. He then joined Retina Consultants, Ltd.
Dr. Shapiro has been the Chicago Center principal investigator for several key clinical trials for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. He has also been invited to speak internationally on retinopathy of prematurity and pediatric retinal diseases. He has edited two books, contributed many chapters, and authored more than 100 scientific articles. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Life Fellow of American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO). Dr. Shapiro is also a member of the Association of Pediatric Retina Specialists, the International Congress-Ocular Oncology, and the ISERG.
Dr. Shapiro is known for his kind bedside manner and his compassion. For his efforts, Vitals (vitals.com) awarded him the 2015 Compassionate Doctor Recognition. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, Vitals honored him with their Patients’ choice Award.
