About Dr. Jairo Cruz, DPM

About Dr. Cruz

The goal of the team at Gentle Foot Care Clinic is to provide comprehensive podiatry care for men, women, and children living in and around Zephyrhills and Brandon, Florida, and throughout Pasco and Hillsborough Counties.

Expert podiatrist, Jairo Cruz, DPM, leads the team and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of common foot and ankle-related health problems including bunions, diabetic foot care, flatfeet, gout, ingrown toenails, heel pain, and hammertoes. Whenever possible, Dr. Cruz recommends conservative measures of care to treat these issues, but when necessary, he also performs minimally invasive surgery.

Whenever possible, Dr. Cruz and the team recommend conservative, alternative methods of treatment. Oftentimes, healthy lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, as well as at-home treatments like stretches, rest, and alternating between ice and heat are enough to relieve pain and discomfort.

Dr. Cruz always sets aside plenty of time to meet with new patients and develop unique treatment plans based on their health history, concerns, and background. His attention to detail and commitment to patient satisfaction ensures all of his clients receive the best quality care.

To receive the best, most comprehensive podiatric care, partner with the team at Gentle Foot Care Clinic. Make your appointment today by calling the office nearest you or by clicking the online booking tool.

About Dr. Candice Kepich, DPM

Candice A. Kepich, DPM, DABFAS, is a dedicated podiatrist at Sarasota Foot Care Center. She currently sees patients at the practice’s two convenient locations in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Kepich is originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania. After graduating summa cum laude from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Science in biology, she moved to Philadelphia. She became interested in podiatry after her own experience as a patient of a podiatrist in her hometown. The combination of surgery, office procedures, sports medicine, and diabetic foot care opened her eyes to a career in podiatric medicine and surgery.

She earned her Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2008. While there, she served as Vice President of the Stirling Hartford Anatomical Honor Society. Dr. Kepich then completed a three-year podiatric medicine and surgical residency at Mercy Suburban Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident during her final year. Following residency, she moved to Sarasota with her husband, also a physician.

Dr. Kepich is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Florida Podiatric Medical Association.

Her professional interests include diabetes education, sports medicine, wound care, surgical and nonsurgical treatments of foot and ankle pathology, and pediatrics.

Her personal interests include spending time with her husband, son, and daughter, boating, paddleboarding, and enjoying the outdoors in Florida and at their family cabin in Wyoming.

About Dr. Jay Badell, DPM

Dr. Badell received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Indiana University where he was recognized as an academic founder’s scholar.  He then went on to complete a master’s degree in biomedical science where he finished in the top of his class.  Dr. Badell then attended Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago and earned his doctorate in podiatric medicine and surgery.  He then went on to complete a comprehensive three-year trauma, reconstructive, and elective foot and ankle surgery residency at Community Health Network in Indianapolis.  While in residency, Dr. Badell was exposed to a wide variety of surgical techniques throughout the lower extremity including trauma, arthritis care, deformity correction and reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, and limb salvage among many others.

Following residency training, Dr. Badell was chosen for the highly coveted fellowship position with Florida Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center.  This fellowship extensively covered all aspects of lower extremity surgery with a focus on trauma, complex deformity correction, total ankle replacement, and minimally invasive/arthroscopic procedures.

Dr. Badell has also been involved in academic research from his undergraduate education in psychology continuing into the present day.  He has published in national journals and has won awards for his research at both national and regional academic conferences.

Dr. Badell takes pride in thoroughly explaining and discussing all possible treatment options with his patients.  He wants each patient to be active in the decision making process and takes the time to create a treatment plan specific to each patient’s needs.

Outside of work, Dr. Badell is actively involved with the Special Olympics of Florida as the clinical director for Sarasota County for their FitFeet division. He enjoys golf, paddle boarding, and spending time with his wife and two mini-aussiedoodles.

About Dr. James Cottom, DPM

Dr. Cottom received his bachelor’s degree with honors from Michigan State University. In 2002 he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Scholl College / Finch University, in Chicago, Illinois. Subsequently, he completed a three-year surgical residency in reconstructive and trauma surgery of the foot and ankle at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan focusing in all areas of Foot, Ankle, and Leg Surgery. Dr. Cottom is also extensively trained in the conservative and surgical treatment of diabetic conditions affecting the lower extremity including limb salvage.

Dr. Cottom is honored to be one of only a few podiatric surgeons in the United States and the only in the state of Florida that has completed a 12 month surgical fellowship at the prestigious Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio. This is a unique fellowship that trains both Podiatric and Orthopedic Surgeons. This advanced surgical training focused on foot and ankle trauma, reconstruction as well as total ankle replacement. This was completed in Columbus, Ohio under the direction of Gregory Berlet MD, Thomas Lee MD and Terrence Philbin DO and was affiliated with The Ohio State University. This is the same type of fellowship that MD/DO orthopedic surgeons complete if they wish to sub-specialize in the foot and ankle.
In 2005 he completed an AO International Trauma and Reconstructive Foot and Leg Fellowship under the direction of Dr. Sigvard Hansen MD in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Cottom also completed a Fellowship in Kurgan, Russia focusing on the Ilizarov technique for correction of acute trauma and complex deformities of the lower extremity in both adult and pediatric patients.

Dr. Cottom is currently the only Fellowship Trained Foot and Ankle Surgeon in the region who is trained on 10 FDA approved Total Ankle Replacements including both primary and revisions. Not every patient is a candidate for this type of treatment. During a short visit in the office all options can be explored.

Dr. Cottom has authored numerous publications in the area of Foot, Ankle, and Leg surgery and has won research awards both at the state and national levels for his work. He is very active in lecturing as well as in teaching the latest surgical procedures to other surgeons. He is a devoted patient advocate who strongly believes that the quality of education and training make a difference in treatment outcomes. Dr. Cottom is a member of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons which helps deliver superior continuing medical education to foot and ankle surgeons in the United States. He also serves as the Fellowship Director of the Florida Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Center 12-month Foot and Ankle Fellowship. A native of Michigan, Cottom now lives in Sarasota, Florida with his wife Devin and two daughter's Rowan and Renley.
