I was extremely happy to get an appointment so quickly. The people in the registration desk were very friendly. Wait time to see the doctor was a little long because he was looking at the exrays taken. He explained what was happenShow moreing but I needed an MRI to be certain & hoped insurance would approve quickly. He said we would schedule the MRI & he would see me right after to discuss the next step. All employees were very happy to help & very friendly.
Dr. Castro is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic spinal surgery at BOSS Orthopaedics in Beaufort, Hilton Head, and Bluffton, SC.
Dr. Castro earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Bioengineering from Clemson University in Clemson, SC and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and went on to complete fellowship training in Complex Spinal Deformities at the University of Colorado.
During residency and fellowship training, Dr. Castro was very active in spinal biomechanics research. He has presented research at various national orthopaedic meetings and has numerous publications including journal articles and book chapters to his credit. Dr. Castro was awarded the John H. Moe Award from the Scoliosis Research Society. He remains actively involved in Spinal Biomechanics research and has designed and patented medical implants that are currently in use today.
Dr. Castro has extensive experience treating all disorders of the spine in both adults and children. Over the last 20 years he has developed one of the busiest spine practices in Denver, Colorado, and has been selected as one of Denver’s TOP DOCS. Dr. Castro is well-versed in and utilizes the latest surgical techniques including minimally invasive surgery and disc replacement. Dr. Castro typically exhausts non-surgical options prior to considering surgical intervention.
When not working, Dr. Castro enjoys fly fishing, boating, golf, and intermittently participating in IRONMAN events. His recent return to South Carolina was to be closer to family and friends.

Dr. Castro was personable and professional in explaining his diagnosis as well as addressing alternative treatments. His office personnel were organized in gathering information and moving the appointment along including x-rays for the doctor to review prior to his recommendations for treatment.

I had to reschedule my appointment I waited a month to get because when I showed up for my appointment I was told the doctor went on vacation. I had brought a disk of my recent MRI and they downloaded it into my chart for next time. When I showed up for the appointment I waited 45 minutes to get into see the doctor and watched as 3 people who came in after me went in before me. And I over heard the one person say their appointment was for 15 minutes after mine but he went in ahead of me. And once I got in to see the doctor, he seemed not to listen to the events i tried to explain to him that lead up to me coming to see him. He seemed more fixated on the previous appointment I had with him years ago. I was very diassapointed in my treatment from the office staff, nursing and doctor. Not very eager for my follow up.

Dr Castro listened to my concerns and ordered my X-Rays and Scans. We then proceeded with a plan that was executed to perfection. Recovery is proceeding as expected and I am thrilled with the results.

I have always found Dr. Castro, knowledgeable, friendly, accessible. He performed two procedures; one a laminectomy and spinal decompression hoping a less invasive surgery might do the trick. But a second surgery was necessary. Fusion of three vertebrae was successful. Happy to have him as my surgeon!
