Daniel Howard, MD, FAAOS, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in sports medicine. He provides individualized, compassionate care to patients at Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group in Mount Kisco, Fishkill, and Carmel, New York, and Danbury, Connecticut.
Dr. Howard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the cross country and track and field teams. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis before completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident during his final year. He then went on to the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles to complete his sports medicine fellowship, where he was part of the medical staff of the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Sparks, and many junior colleges and high schools.
He has written numerous peer-reviewed publications and performed research involving NFL, MLB, MLS, and NWSL athletes. His research interests and projects include injury prevention in youth and adolescent pitchers and athletes, safe return to sport after injury, improving and measuring patient outcomes, and improving surgical techniques.
He was awarded top doctor from NY Top Docs, a division of USA Top Docs, in 2024.
Dr. Howard treats a wide variety of orthopaedic and sports-related issues of the knee, shoulder, elbow, and hip. He has particular clinical interests in knee injuries of the ligaments, meniscus, and cartilage; shoulder injuries of the rotator cuff, labrum, and instability; working with overhead and throwing athletes; and working with runners.
Dr. Howard offers his patients specialized treatment with minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery, as well as state-of-the-art technology including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell treatment. He currently serves as the Team Physician for Mahopac High School and Assistant Team Physician for Pace University. Dr. Howard is an excellent doctor and fine diagnostician. He walked me carefully through my scan images and explained the break and what it meant. The staff, however, were often unfriendly, judgy-seeming; after the diagnosis of a broken hip—serious!—it blew my mind that Somers Orthopedic did not help me find and schedule an urgently needed MRI.
Dr. Carlesi is an amazing Physician who is compassionate and knows his craft. He always has ideas to try to make things better or less painful. He has been my doctor for many years now, and I wouldn’t think of seeing anyone else!!!

Dr Carlesi has been my doctor for over a decade. I had been searching for several years to find the right doctor for me. Even though I am an RN and in the medical field for over 30 years, it was not that simple for me. After an injury causing herniated discs, etc.,… which caused unbearable pain almost constantly which in the beginning It felt like it started from the top of my head to my toes. I had previously seen,orthopedic specialists/pain management, neurologist, who were telling me there was nothing they could do for me. For some reason, their first thought was invasive surgery and two of the doctors said that I would not even survive surgery so there was nothing they could do for me I was overwhelmed physically and mentally. How would I be able to live the rest of my life feeling the way I did at that time. Then I was referred to Dr. CARLESI !! He is not only extremely knowledgeable, Think out of the box but he is one of the most compassionate people and Drs I have met. There ARE alternatives other than major surgery that can at least lessen the pain !!! I searched for a couple years to find the right Dr until I got it right. I absolutely recommend Dr Carlesi to anyone who is looking for relief from the constant overwhelming suffering, that people like me with chronic and acute pain deal with.
