Dr. Ascunce, has and will always be my kind of Doctor. Kind, considerate, compassionate but most of all caring. He has always been, with me, a very patient and attentive person. I trust and admire his manner. He is upfront and honShow moreest. Above all he listens attentively. I can remember seeing him at the Ryan-NENA Clinic, on the lower East side. He looks a little younger now but he also appears happier and much healthier. In my first visit he has already scheduled me for a couple of appointments to expedite my recovery. I have no doubt that I will come out of this quickly and painlessly. A young and highly intelligent man. I am so very fortunate to have been able to see him again. I am no longer worried about my multiple conditions. He is clear, consice and a true professional. Thank you for allowing me to speak my piece.
Most Doctors tend to talk at you in appointments with not much patience for whatever your situation may be. Always feeling as if I need to be rushed out so they can get to their next appointment. Dr. Ascunce is the exact opposite Show moreof that. He talks with you about your situation, offers many options based in new and old research, gives you space to find your words for expressing you let symptoms, and overall makes you know you have his full attention and time I not an issue. He’s a great Doctor who understands half of the appointment needs to be creating an environment where the patient can feel relaxed enough to be able to articulate their symptoms accurately as to receive the best assistant from him as possible.
Meet Dr. Ascunce
Gil I. Ascunce, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist in New York City who treats patients from his main office in Manhattan on Madison Avenue, as well as in several non-profit community healthcare centers throughout the city. Dr. Ascunce has expertise in a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders and conditions including acid reflux, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. He also has special expertise in pancreatic diseases, removing large polyps, and Barrett's esophagus. He was born in Virginia to Cuban and Spanish immigrants, and he has native fluency in both Spanish and English.
Dr. Ascunce completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. At Georgetown, he excelled in academics and was also a decorated varsity athlete for the Hoyas’ Big East championship soccer team. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Ascunce went on to earn a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics and then also earned his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors.
Dr. Ascunce then moved to New York for a residency in Internal Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. After residency, he continued his medical education and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Florida. While training in gastroenterology, Dr. Ascunce developed a special interest in advanced endoscopic procedures. Finally, he returned to New York for an additional year of specialized training with an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. While he was once a full-time interventional endoscopist and in academic practice, his current practice emphasis is to treat and educate his patients and their community for all gastrointestinal diseases.
Dr. Ascunce is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and he teaches medical residents and gastroenterologists-in-training at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Ascunce has engaged in various research projects including basic science research, clinical pharmacology, and clinical research. He has published papers in several major gastroenterology journals and he has presented his research at several national conferences.

Explains issues well—including tech terms & related jargon —usually without even being asked. Dr. Ascunce went much further than "the extra mile:" I came to him with an urgent problem that my insurance had denied payment for. While I was in Dr. Ascunce's office, after we spoke, he phoned my PCP, then a highly recommended surgeon directly. As a result, the surgeon saw me the next day and scheduled what could have been timely and life-saving surgery. Dr. Ascunce's caring, dedication, professionalism and expertise were all exceptional and amazing. I highly recommend him.

During my consultations, Dr. Ascunce took the time to explain my condition and the proposed treatment plan in detail, ensuring that I fully understood every aspect. His approach was patient and empathetic, which greatly alleviated any anxieties I had about my health concerns.
I felt very comfortable during my office visit with Dr. Ascunce. He addressed my health issues with possible causes of my gastro symtoms. He set up some additional tests to confirm his diagnosis.
