Dr. Strohmeyer is absolutely top notch, as are all of the other doctors at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics. They are without a doubt the best orthopedic practice in Wasilla/Palmer. Dr. Strohmeyer clearly explained the knee surgery that he would do if I chose to have it, and I liked that his primary concern in general is his patient's outcome and not based on his own pride in his skill or enjoyment of surgeryShow more, which has been my experience with other surgeons.

About Gregory Strohmeyer, MD

Gregory Strohmeyer, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics in Wasilla, Alaska. He was born and raised right here in Palmer, Alaska. He is the Matanuska Susitna Valley’s only specialty-trained fracture surgeon, fellowship-trained in Trauma.

A leader in the robotic-assisted joint replacement procedure, Dr. Strohmeyer specializes in the subvastus approach for knee replacement.  A muscle-sparing, minimally invasive technique that accesses the knee joint without cutting the quadriceps tendon or muscle. Instead Dr. Strohmeyer moves the quadricep to the side when accessing the knee joint. Using the Mako robot for insertion combined with the subvastus approach provides the benefit of precise implant placement with robotics with less pain and quicker return of function from the muscle sparing approach.

After graduating from Colony High School, where he was a four-year varsity letter hockey player, Dr. Strohmeyer attended Montana State University, where he studied biochemistry and graduated with high honors. He continued on to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, for medical school. Dr. Strohmeyer completed his orthopedic residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he received a broad education in orthopedic surgery. After residency, due to his interest in broken bones, he pursued an additional year of training in orthopedic trauma with the orthopedic trauma surgeons of Northern California in Roseville, California. During his fellowship year, Dr. Strohmeyer studied the most up-to-date techniques for the treatment of complex fractures in the upper and lower extremities, as well as the pelvis and acetabulum. He gained experience treating post-traumatic complications, including non-unions (where the bone doesn’t heal), malunions (where the bones heal in an abnormal position), post-operative infections, and post-traumatic arthritis. His fellowship also gave him expertise in hip arthroplasty surgery, including the direct anterior approach for total hip replacement. In addition to treating fractures, Dr. Strohmeyer’s interests include total knee replacement, rotator cuff repairs, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, osteochondral allograft transplantation, foot and ankle surgery, pediatric orthopedics, and hand surgery.

Throughout Dr. Strohmeyer’s education, he has been active in research and has been published in multiple journals, including Orthopaedic Knowledge Online Journal, Foot and Ankle International, Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Dr. Strohmeyer resides in Palmer and is accompanied by his wife, Cindy, who was also raised in the Mat-Su Valley. They are joined by their three children. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Strohmeyer enjoys hunting, fishing, flying, snow machining, playing hockey, snowboarding, and mountain biking. He is a two-time finisher in the Iron Dog Pro Class (2021, 2022), and was a commercial fishing deckhand in Bristol, Bay in 1999, 2000, 2004 & 2006.  He is eager to have the opportunity to return home and serve the community he was raised in.
