I went to Dr. Brooks after frustration with another doctor over my care. I felt he did not really listen to my concerns as he recommended a hysterectomy to me as a routine procedure at 33 for small fibroids. I refused it every yeaShow morer. I’m 51 now and needed a hysterectomy last year at 50. I learned from Dr. Brooks that at 33 I could have had “other” procedures all those years ago to address fibroids before they were so big and painful. Black women are often taken advantage of by white OBGYNs.
I left a white, male GYN because he was too eager to require me a hysterectomy in my early 30’s for fibroids. He did not explain or offer any other options, even though I knew there were other ways to treat fibroids. This is how BShow morelack women are treated. Doctors see us as income rather than patients. I stopped that doctor and started looking for a black, female GYN. I found Dr. Brooks who explained and offered me the treatment I wanted. I felt like a valued patient not a financial bottom line.
