Dr. Joseph Neighbors, MD

Expert urologist Joseph Neighbors, Jr., MD, brings nearly three decades of experience in urology and urologic surgery to the Associated Urologists of North Carolina, practicing out of their Raleigh office.

Dr. Neighbors was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. He began his professional education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. After graduation, Dr. Neighbors pursued training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Neighbors subsequently completed an internship in general surgery, also at the Medical College of Virginia. 

The following year, Dr. Neighbors decided to further his postgraduate medical training by completing additional general surgery experience, followed by a residency in urology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. 

Dr. Neighbors is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and proudly holds membership in the American Urological Association, North Carolina Urological Association, and North Carolina Medical Society. 

Dr. Neighbors regularly cares for patients with general urologic problems, but his special areas of interest include urologic malignancies, endourology, prostate enlargement, and robotic prostate surgery. 

During the course of his career, Dr. Neighbors has served as Chairman of the Division of Urology for Wake County and a member of the Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Neighbors also participated in several committees at the University of North Carolina Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. When he isn’t with patients, Dr. Neighbors serves as a sub-investigator for ongoing urologic clinical trials. 

Outside of his career, Dr. Neighbors and his wife have three children. In his free time, Dr. Neighbors enjoys spending time with his family, following his children’s sports, participating in church activities, and playing tennis and golf. Dr. Neighbors also enjoys cheering for his alma maters’ sports teams and the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League.
