I feel like I'm becoming a regular at the practice. Dr. Dean replaced my shoulder a couple years ago and I could not have written a script for a better outcome. Everything from the initial visits, diagnosis, prep, surgery, PT and Show moremost importantly outcome were great. Now it's a knee. He takes great care to cover all the bases. X-rays. MRI. Whatever is needed to make a thorough diagnosis. He explains in detail what the imaging shows and what all the options are. And he's patient with my questions. I could not expect anything better from Dr Dean and the staff.
He’s very precise with his explanations of different CARDS I have options on.. scoping of my shoulder or total shoulder replacement or what I opted for today was an cortisone injection.. very clear on all three choices.. I waited Show moreclose to an hour in the room before he came in.. was a bit disappointed no one came in to check on me and for me to ask if I am next or whatever.. other than that.. I like Dr Dean very much.. he took care of my shoulder and was very pleasant to talk with..
About Dr. Dean
Mark Dean, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with particular expertise in sports medicine and shoulder and knee injuries. He currently sees patients at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
After completing his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Dean received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Subsequently, he did a fellowship in shoulder and knee surgery and sports medicine at the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado.
Dr. Dean’s primary focus is sports medicine for active patients of all ages, with an emphasis on rehabilitation and surgical reconstruction of shoulder and knee injuries. Over the past 20 years, he has performed more than 14,000 surgeries on adult and pediatric patients, including high school, college, and professional athletes, as well as senior athletes.
Dr. Dean has lectured at the regional and national levels on orthopaedic topics with particular emphasis on shoulder and knee injuries, skiing, tennis, and golf-related injuries. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as a board member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Fellowship Exam Committee. Additionally, he has contributed many academic articles and book chapters to such publications as the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, and the Handbook of Sports Medicine.
Locally, Dr. Dean serves as the team physician for many area high school athletic teams and as a consultant to elite tennis and golf academies. He has also served as a team physician for the Denver Broncos, the United States Disabled Ski Team, the US Pro Ski Tour, and the US Olympic Ski Team. He is married to Brooke Dean, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, and has three children, Hunter, Elise, and Jenna.

Dr Dean assessed and performed the urgent surgical procedure for my meniscus root repair. As promised, I would not need knee replacement if I followed the care plan and PT. Back to pickleball medals! He is caring, compassionate and competent- everything you could ask for in a MD.

Great doctor
A long wait, but both the staff and the doctor were very apologetic and concerned for my personal time. Once I met with Dr. Dean, the wait time was forgotten. I was so thankful to have an honest assessment of the current condition of my right knee and surgical option after several years of cortisone injections.
Great result following my Left total knee replacement!

I like the way Dr. Dean explains everything to me. He is very professional and caring. The girls are at the front desk are very efficient and welcoming.
Dr Dean’s knew exactly what my problem was and options for correction. He was able to give me the treatment immediately in the office after my consultation. Highly recommend him!
I’ve been a patient for years. My first surgery with Dr. Dean was a bicep repair and the second was a total should replacement. In both cases he fully explained what the problem was and what the recovery period would be like. I’m very happy to say that because of his skill I am on my way to a full recovery!

Dr Dean explained the diagnosis and offered several treatment plans providing good information on the pros and cons of each one. When I opted for surgery he explained the risks as well as the benefits. He was also cognizant of travel time and explained why he wanted to do the surgery in Beaufort rather than locally. Overall I found him to be kind and he listened to me and provided opportunity for me to ask questions.
Dr Dean listens to all my concerns and gave me options which allow me to make an informed decision regarding my knee.
I had a total knee replacement 12/15/25 and must say the entire experience was very good! From the support at BOSS to the surgery center on HHI, finishing with Carolina Sportscare Physical Therapy. All very professional and caring. This is my second surgery with Dr. Dean, the beat of the best! I trust him completely beginning to end.
