I am a patient of Dr. Sheppard from decades ago, when he treated me in the hospital for a lower bowel obstruction. I just as recent as this week had a concern with my health requiring surgery (totally unrelated to my digestive Show moresystem) in this instance. I wanted to consult Dr. Shepppard for some post op concerns related to this surgery though he wasn't the surgeon. I was scheduled to see Dr. Sheppard on Tuesday(1/13/26). He was very personable, patient and kind with me, as what I've only known him to be from past experiences. Without going into the details about the concerns I had that caused me to make my appointment ; he clearly put my mind to rest about my concerns post recent surgery. as I already stated totally unrelated to his type surgery practice. Dr. Sheppard is clearly not confused about the callimg on his life.He is absolutely definitely one of God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus to bring his compassionate ministry of healing to all who are blessed to call him their doctor. I truly love Dr. Sheppard. May God bless him to live a very long time ! thank You God for Dr.Ray Sheppard, Jr. If anyone needs a general surgeon you need not seek any where beyond Dr.Ray Sheppard,Jr. Gloria P.Batts
Dr. Sheppard and staff made my initial appointment very easy. He took the time to explain the procedure I needed and answered all the questions that I asked. I was very pleased with the outcome of the whole process. I’m not lShow moreooking forward to the surgery but I’m very glad to have a Doctor of his caliber taking care of my issues. I highly recommend him if you have a need for a surgeon. His entire office is quite a team!
Ray Sheppard Jr., MD, has never been able to dunk a basketball and he lacks any musical aptitude, but he was blessed with a mind and talent for surgery. This, coupled with his compassionate approach to every patient who walks through his doors in Madison and Huntsville, Alabama, makes him an excellent choice for general surgery.
After graduating magna cum laude with a degree in physics from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Dr. Sheppard went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Alabama (UAB) in Birmingham.
Dr. Sheppard completed his surgical training at the prestigious DeBakey Department of Surgery at the Baylor School of Medicine in Houston, where he was fortunate to be mentored by world-class surgeons at the renowned Ben Taub Trauma Center, as well as the famous MD Anderson Cancer Center.
During his education and training, Dr. Sheppard served as a teaching assistant both in the physics department at Georgia Tech and the anatomy department at UAB. While at Baylor, he was recognized with the Outstanding Chief Surgical Resident Award for his exemplary teaching and leadership. Today he continues as an associate professor for the Huntsville campus of the UAB Medical School.
Through his extensive training, Dr. Sheppard developed remarkable skills that allow him to handle the most complex surgical problems, as well as routine general surgical cases.

There was no definite derision at the time Dr.Shepherd wanted to follow up on some previous surgery I had so we are waiting for info I appreciate his concerns hopefully all will go well

Couldn’t be better
Dr. Shepherd gave thorough and accurate explanations of the procedure, the healing process and possible side effects. Should the need arise I will definitely go to him in the future.
Excellent visit with Dr Sheppard, he made sure I was comfortable with the way my hernia surgery was going to be done and answered all of my questions.

Dr. Sheppard as a surgeon and as a person is great! My mom raved about him for years, so when I needed a simple surgery I requested him, and I’m glad I did. I had a cyst removed from my shoulder and it healed exceptionally well—there is hardly a trace of a scalpel. Recently, I needed another surgery, and I went to Dr. Sheppard so he could implant a port with a neck catheter The tube for the catheter blended in so well with my neck tendons that it took me at a week to even notice it, and I have a skinny neck.. The port is very small, and was placed in a spot that is usually covered by a shirt. It is noticeable close up (as it should be), but even then it isn’t glaringly obvious. I have worn several fitted tee’s and the port does not stick out. After 2 surgeries by Dr. Sheppard, I can truthfully say that he is a great surgeon, with a great bedside manner, and I100% recommend him. **Prior to the operating room he asks if he can pray for you—his prayers are sincere, and not canned. I pray to myself 100 times before a procedure, and I am grateful that he takes the extra time (they aren’t short prayers lol) to pray with and for me. For those that are opposed to him praying before surgery, please don’t let that sway you from a great surgeon—he does ask and you can say no.**

UPDATE: I am 4 weeks post op and wanted to provide an updated review. I could not be more pleased with the care I have received from Dr. Sheppard and his staff!! His bedside manner is top notch. He asked if he could pray with me before my surgery. I felt very blessed to have a surgeon who cared enough to pray with me. His prayer was so meaningful. He also gave God the credit for a successful surgery the next day when he visited me in the hospital. His nurse Carla was very responsive and so helpful with my short term disability paperwork and pulling my drain tubes. I will most certainly continue to recommend Dr. Sheppard to family and friends!!! INITIAL REVIEW: I was amazed at Dr. Sheppard's thoughtfulness and the care he took to explain in easy to understand details about my upcoming surgery. I didn't feel rushed and was given the time needed for me to address my questions and concerns. I have already recommended Dr. Sheppard to others. His office staff is just as wonderful and caring.
