He is Extraordinary! Very knowledgeable in all aspects of the Orthopedic Surgery and Systems! Dr. Powell is kind, considerate, thoughtful, passionate and patient with me and other patients that I know! I think he is a hands on person, leader! I was so ashamed of my feet, I didn’t even want him to look at them! He made me feel at ease! Dr.Powell talked, explained a plan for my feet, that he could do! Then executed the plan! My experience with Dr. Powell and their nurses are very good the nurses are very nice and polite and Dr. Powell is very good he help me with my carpal tunnel in my left hand and he help me with my left ankle today and now I can wShow morealk on it a little better but it It still has to heal but he is really good at what he do you prefer anyone to go see him he’s a very good doctor yes so he’s a really big help
Thomas Powell, MD, is a physician who specializes in orthopedic surgery. He diagnoses and treats patients at Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. He is also affiliated with Brookwood Baptist Health, serving the Birmingham metro area and surrounding cities. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Powell earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1991. He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1996.
Dr. Powell has served as the chairman of the department of surgery, the credentials committee chairman, and the medical staff president at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He currently serves on the AO/ASIF orthopedic faculty.
To stay up to date with the latest advances in Medicine, Dr. Powell maintains memberships with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Southern Medical Association, Jefferson County Orthopedic Society, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and Alabama Orthopedic Society.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Powell was a four-year football letterman at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was first-team All-American his senior year. He enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with his family, and participating in music and mission opportunities through his church.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Powell for years. He’s performed several surgeries in my knee, shoulder, and foot. He gives excellent care and follow up. His staff is competent and friendly.
