Thankful for being able to get an appointment Monday morning! (Had a fall Sunday evening, and had concerns regarding my knee.) The front desk staff is amazing! All who enter the office are greeted with a smile and graciousness.Show more No concern is too big or too small. The medical staff is outstanding—efficient, eye to eye contact, and sensitive to needs. Nurse Practitioner was incredibly attentive to all concerns. She made direct eye contact, listened intently, and guided the conversation so well! After examining my knee, she communicated her assessment very precisely and clearly. All was done with professionalism and respect for my concerns. I appreciated, so much, her willingness to actually sit and not only listen to my words, but to “hear” them! Dr Powell was his usual kind demeanor, and gentle, unhurried self! He took time to hear “my story” of event that led up to the visit. He confirmed what his Nurse Practitioner had communicated, checked my knees, and reiterated the welcome to return for further evaluation if needed. SO THANKFUL for this Orthopedic practice! Definitely one of a kind!

Thomas Powell, MD, is a physician who specializes in orthopedic surgery. He diagnoses and treats patients at Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. He is also affiliated with Brookwood Baptist Health, serving the Birmingham metro area and surrounding cities. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has expertise in arthroscopic surgery and special interests in trauma, sports medicine, and adult reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Powell earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1991. He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1996.
Dr. Powell has served as the chairman of the department of surgery, the credentials committee chairman, and the medical staff president at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He currently serves on the AO/ASIF orthopedic faculty.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Powell was a four-year football letterman at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was first-team All-American his senior year. He enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with his family, and participating in music and mission opportunities through his church.

DR. Powell did my hip replacement t and it was so perfect. I was back to work in 4 weeks and I am doing well. Yesterday I had to return to Dr. Powell for shoulder pain. I got xrays and a cortisone shot. Again very happy with my visit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I would not go to any other orthopedic physician. I have been going to him for many years. He is the most caring, kind physician I have ever seen.
