Vasili Karas, MD, MS, is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and rapid recovery hip and knee replacements, as well as complex revision joint surgeries. He is committed to empowering his patients to overcome their pain and resume the activities they love.
A Chicagoland native with the goal of giving back to his community, Dr. Karas earned his medical degree at Rush University’s Medical College in Chicago. He then went to North Carolina to complete his residency training at Duke University Medical Center. After that, he returned to Chicago to finish his fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery at Rush University Medical Center.
Dr. Karas’ approach to medicine involves spending time with his patients, fostering good communication, and offering the latest advances in medical technology. He has over 40 peer reviewed publications and is a committee member of the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Through physical therapy, joint injections, and surgical procedures, he strives to get patients back on their feet as quickly as possible without compromising technique. He works closely with patients throughout their road to recovery and is highly skilled in addressing the full spectrum of concerns when it comes to hip or knee joints.

Dr Karas is very knowledgeable and patient focused when caring for his patients. He maintains contact with his surgery patients thru informative & encouraging texts or by phone if needed. His support team is awesome - they are also knowledgeable and treat you like family. Always timely responsive and helpful.
Doctor Karas and Madison take time with you to listen to your questions and answer them and explain things. They are very professional and personable. The entire staff is kind and helpful . Doctor Karas and Madison listen to your questions and answer them to your understanding. Very professional. They spend time with you, not rushing through your appointment. The entire staff is friendly and courteous. There are a number of patients from my area, 2 hours away, that are all satisfied and share the same opinion. I would highly recommend them.
I felt that I was cared about, the Doctor showed concern of my situation
The Doctor showed me much concern about me issue. The Doctor could see that I was a person that was going through lots of pain. The most of all the Doctor saw that I was having pain not only in my knees but another part of my body and showed compassion and concern and inquired why I was crying and what was causing me pain in my Arm. He sent for that specialist to come see what was happening to me..
The experience was good, but most of the time, I saw one of his many assistants. With that said, doctor Karas trained them well.
Positive in all respect save for having to wait in a chilly office in the exam shorts. An offer of a blanket would have been helpful and welcome.
The entire Team was very responsive to any questions I had. I am very grateful for that.
I can’t say enough great things about Dr Karas very considerate and kind awesome bed side manners as well!! Had my first TRKR August 24th, my pain has been very minimal hardly use a cane only when around a crowd so nobody bumps into me, never a brace and I’m so looking forward to having my TLKR Oct 13th!! So if your on the fence where to go Dr Karas is your Dr, he’s the BEST!!!!

Do to a change of policy and being booked until 2027, Dr Karas recommended an orthopedic doctor who could handel my case in a timely fashion. He also brought this doctor into the exame room so I could meet him and explain the procedure.
First time, good experience and good patient care
Excellent exam experience by Dr. Karas and his staff. I came 1/2 hour early for my appointment but was taken immediately for x-ray then exam. Dr. Karas explained the swelling in my right knee - from a fall - and reassured me there was no damage to the replacement; suggested how to treat it and I left very relieved and satisfied with the experience.
Dr. Karas was recommended to . He was professional and friendly at our initial meeting. My surgery is next week.
Exceptional surgeon and support team. I highly recommend this physician I was up walking right after surgery and attended my grandson’s hockey game the same night.

Dr. Karas was so caring when my hip dislocated last year. He got me in for surgery two days later and figured out that scar tissue was causing the problem. A year later, my hip feels good again.
Very caring and professional when asking questions and an excellent surgeon. Have finally been able to have comfort in my knees. Best I have felt in 25 years.
Dr. Karas is an excellent surgeon and his entire team is pleasant and helpful. I had my hip replaced three years ago. I am having my knee replaced in two months. It was absolutely the best experience I have ever had with a medical team He uses the latest technology and mitigates bleeding as much as possible.
