He graduated from Highland high school before joining the US Navy and spending 5 years as a ship electrician. He returned to get an undergraduate degree in chemistry from New Mexico State before heading on to an MD degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. After finishing residency in family medicine he returned to work in Northern New Mexico. He spent two years practicing medicine in rural South Australia.
