About Dr. Suzanne Fenske, MD

TārāMD Signature Provider

Dr. Suzanne Fenske is the Founder and Medical Director of TārāMD, an innovative women's health practice in New York City specializing in integrative gynecology, functional medicine, menopause, hormone optimization, and longevity medicine. As a double board-certified gynecologist and integrative medicine physician, Dr. Fenske is nationally recognized for helping women navigate every stage of life—from adolescence through menopause and beyond—using evidence-based, personalized care.

Dr. Fenske proudly serves as a Health Ambassador for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office on Women's Health, helping advance national education and awareness surrounding women's health, menopause, hormone health, and preventive medicine. She is also a sought-after national speaker, educator, media contributor, and physician thought leader, regularly appearing on television, podcasts, in national publications, and at medical conferences to advocate for a more comprehensive, patient-centered approach to women's healthcare.

At TārāMD, Dr. Fenske specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of complex women's health conditions, including perimenopause, menopause, hormone imbalances, endometriosis, pelvic pain, sexual wellness concerns, metabolic dysfunction, and PMOS (formerly PCOS, Polymetabolic Ovarian Syndrome). Her signature approach combines the best of conventional gynecology with functional and integrative medicine, incorporating advanced hormone therapy, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, targeted supplementation, and personalized treatment strategies designed to identify and address the root causes of illness.

Dr. Fenske's passion for women's health began with her own personal journey. In her twenties, she was diagnosed with PMOS (formerly PCOS) and was treated with birth control pills, the conventional standard of care at the time. While this helped manage one aspect of her condition, it significantly worsened her irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). After discontinuing the medication and experiencing complete resolution of her gastrointestinal symptoms, she became fascinated by the intricate relationship between hormones, metabolism, gut health, nutrition, inflammation, stress, and overall wellbeing.

Years later, following a prolonged period of significant life stress that resulted in amenorrhea (loss of menstrual cycles), Dr. Fenske experienced firsthand how dramatically lifestyle factors influence hormonal health. When her cycles returned, she realized she had entered perimenopause, inspiring her to dedicate her career to understanding menopause, hormone optimization, healthy aging, and the science of women's longevity.

Dr. Fenske believes exceptional healthcare begins by listening. She takes a highly personalized, patient-centered approach, recognizing that every woman's health journey is unique. Her goal is to empower women with education, partnership, and individualized treatment plans that help them optimize their health—not simply manage symptoms.

Her medical training includes an accelerated medical program at Lehigh University followed by medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and a prestigious fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She later completed advanced training through the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Fenske is board certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Integrative Medicine and is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) and Nationally Certified Menopause Practitioner (NCMP).

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Fenske actively contributes to peer-reviewed research, physician education, and national conversations shaping the future of women's healthcare. She is passionate about advancing evidence-based education surrounding menopause, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT), functional medicine, integrative medicine, PMOS, metabolic health, and preventive care so women can live healthier, longer, and more vibrant lives.

Dr. Fenske lives on Long Island, New York, with her husband, their daughters, two beautiful Golden Cavapoos, Ruby and Roxy, and four beloved sugar gliders—Apple, Snow, Frost, and Cloud. Their family continues to honor the memory of their cherished dog, Lola, whose unconditional love helped shape Dr. Fenske's lifelong appreciation for the extraordinary bond between people and animals. Outside of medicine, she enjoys reading, meditation, exercise, yoga, cooking, lifelong learning, and spending time with her family.

Understanding the Deeper Challenges of Pelvic Health

Despite significant advancements in medical science over the past few decades, pelvic health and related disciplines remain largely underserved. Many underlying pathologies affecting pelvic health continue to be poorly understood, resulting in a detrimental impact on individuals' quality of life.

Numerous patients experience pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction, yet the precise causes often elude medical professionals. This leads to frustration as patients consult multiple specialists in hopes of finding answers, often to no avail. The pelvic region houses several vital organs that play crucial roles in overall well-being, including the urinary, reproductive, and lower gastrointestinal systems — all of which may be simultaneously affected.

The autonomic nervous system plays a central role in regulating pelvic organ functions such as urination, defecation, and sexual activity. Inflammation or dysfunction in this complex neural network — particularly around the sacral region — often contributes to symptoms that are difficult to diagnose or treat effectively.

The complex anatomy and neurophysiology of the pelvic region have posed longstanding challenges for the medical community. Dr. Khashayar Shakiba, a double board-certified gynecologist and urogynecologist, has spent over 25 years working with patients suffering from misunderstood pelvic conditions. After completing advanced training at institutions like New Haven Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Foundation, he began private practice in New Jersey in 2007.

Dr. Shakiba recognized early on that many women with severe pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, or bladder issues were being misdiagnosed or referred to mental health services instead of receiving accurate pelvic care. He questioned why there were no clear answers for widespread symptoms such as severe menstrual pain, unexplained infertility, or GI distress tied to pelvic nerve inflammation.

Conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis are often labeled but rarely explained. In many cases, no root cause is identified, and treatments focus only on symptom relief — leaving patients confused and discouraged.

Through years of multidisciplinary patient care, Dr. Shakiba discovered that many of these symptoms were connected by a common thread: neuropelveology, the study of pelvic nerve function. Yet few specialists were trained to look at pelvic health holistically.

In 2010, he established Women’s Pelvic Surgery of North Jersey in Hackensack, with a mission to innovate, educate, and surgically treat complex pelvic pathologies through advanced robotic technology and a neuroscience-informed approach.

Leading in Women’s Pelvic Neuroscience, Neurosurgery & Research

At Women’s Pelvic Surgery of North Jersey, we combine over two decades of clinical expertise with cutting-edge research in neuropelveology and minimally invasive pelvic surgery to improve outcomes for women with complex pelvic conditions.
