Dr. Mehrine Shaikh is a board-certified ophthalmologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. She specializes in cataract surgery and the medical management of vitreoretinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other complex retinal disorders.
Dr. Shaikh earned her medical degree from Aga Khan University. She further advanced her expertise in retinal disease through a clinical research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Boston, where she participated in the care of patients with complex ocular inflammatory conditions. She completed her ophthalmology residency at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., serving as Chief Resident during her final year.
Driven by a commitment to subspecialty training, Dr. Shaikh completed a fellowship in Medical Retina at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, one of the nation’s leading ophthalmic training programs. Her dedication to preventing blindness has also taken her on multiple international medical mission trips, where she performed sight-saving cataract surgeries for underserved populations.
Dr. Shaikh has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has participated in a variety of clinical trials throughout her career. She remains actively engaged in continuing medical education and regularly attends scientific conferences to stay current with the latest advances in ophthalmology.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), and the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
