David D. Gilbert, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery and glaucoma. He practices at Diablo Eye Associates in Walnut Creek, California.
Dr. Gilbert grew up in the east bay of San Francisco and later graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in biomedical engineering. He completed his glaucoma fellowship training at Stanford University.
Dr. Gilbert received his Medical Degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He stayed at Wake Forest for his ophthalmology residency, where he served as co-chief resident and twice received the resident research award for his publications on glaucoma surgical advances. After residency, Dr. Gilbert returned to the West Coast to complete glaucoma fellowship training at Stanford University and was on the clinical staff. He has authored several papers and given numerous lectures related to glaucoma care.
Dr. Gilbert is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Glaucoma Society, and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He currently serves as a counselor for the Glaucoma Research Foundation. He has been a clinical faculty instructor at the University of California, San Francisco, and a past chair of the Ophthalmology department at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. As a glaucoma subspecialist, he has expertise in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. Dr. Gilbert has performed cataract procedures, glaucoma surgeries, and laser surgeries for over 17 years.

Dr. Gilbert turned on the lights for me as a result of performing cataract operations on both eyes. He took his time with me, was very caring, answered all my questions and got me through all my fears, (which turned out to be unfounded. ) It is a process but not like what I as anticipating from surgery. The operations were efficient and relatively quick. The staff is supportive and very nice. I have not seen bright colors, and had this high degree of vision clarity in years! My advice is if your doctor advises you need cataract surgery do not hesitate, and just do it! The results are certainly worth it!
