Finding a physician who truly changes the trajectory of your care is rare, but finding one who earns the vocal praise of your other doctors is almost unheard of. Dr. Kapteyn is that rare find. I initially sought out Dr. KapteynShow more as a temporary solution while searching for a Palliative Chronic Pain specialist. What I expected to be a "stop-gap" turned into the best medical surprise I’ve ever experienced. I didn’t just find a doctor who was taking new patients; I found a cornerstone for my entire care team. As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Dr. Kapteyn embodies the holistic, "whole-person" approach that is so vital for chronic pain management. His board certifications in Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, and Pain Medicine—combined with his background in Hospice and Palliative care—give him a unique clinical perspective. He doesn’t just look at symptoms; he understands the musculoskeletal system and the human being behind the chart. Dr. K is amazing, I've had back/neck pain that was dismissed for years. He listened to my concerns even when they didn't line up to the what we saw completely on the MRI/Xrays. His team (most of his team) is super friendly and MaxShow more is a rock star!
Dr. Kapteyn received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, followed by a medical internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Kapteyn then pursued his residency at Georgetown University and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington D.C. He further honed his expertise through fellowship training in interventional pain at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr Kapteyn is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, pain medicine, and board eligible Hospice and Palliative care. A multidisciplinary, balanced approach to pain medicine is a hallmark of his care to bring improvement in function.
From 2009 to 2013, Dr. Kapteyn served as the Medical Director of Pain Medicine at Drake Hospital, a University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he served and at times led the medical executive committee and represented Drake on the drug planning and development committee. Kapteyn subsequently entered private practice with Orthopedic Associates Muskegon, where he worked until 2023. During his career, he also worked as a physician consultant with Hydrocision, and as the physician lead in the development of TenJet for minimally invasive tenotomies. Additionally, Dr. Kapteyn worked in hospice and palliative care with Harbor Hospice,and served as an independent director and science consultant on the board of NewAge Beverages from 2017-2020. Dr. Kapteyn has gained recognition for his skills in minimally invasive ultrasound guided procedures, including carpal tunnel release and trigger finger releases, as well as TenJet for elbow tenotomy, hip, shoulder, and achilles tendon. In addition to spinal injections, Dr Kapteyn performs procedures such as basi-vertebral nerve ablation, interspinous vertiflex for spinal stenosis, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, kyphoplasty and radiofrequency ablation. He performs neurolytic blocks for sympathetic nerve pain, and he is also experienced with pain pumps, Botox treatments, including for migraine prophylaxis, prolotherapy, orthobiologics, for both chronic tendon and joint pain, and Biote for bio-identical hormone optimization.
Dr. Kapteyn has numerous contributions to medical research. including NIH research on neurophysiological correlates in chronic stroke patients. He also served as a lead investigator for the PUGET study, which examined the outcomes of tenotomies for medial and lateral epicondylitis. He participated in CITRUS
study with SonexHealth, observing outcomes of ultrasound guided carpal tunnel release. Furthermore, he participated in research on a novel migraine prophylactic treatment for chronic migraine headaches with Healthy Extracts, publishing “A Unique medium chain triglyceride-containing micronutrient complex: Effects on chronic migraine headache”. World Journal of Advanced Research. Dr. Kapteyn’s expertise and compassionate approach to care gained him a reputation of being a “physician’s physician,” as other physicians in the field often consult him for medical advice, guidance and treatment.

A Grand Rapids, MI native, Dr. Kapteyn loves the warm weather and vibrant culture of the nations capital, Washington, DC, and is excited to return. He enjoys ballroom dancing, performing vocally, performing recently with the Williamsburg Symphony, he enjoys both HIIT and tabata exercising, golfing, cooking, gardening and hiking and mountain biking. He has three college-aged daughters and was married to Nancy Kapteyn for 25 years until she passed away from breast cancer. In her memory, Dr. Kapteyn encourages contributions to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

I had a negative experience with this doctor. Dr. Kapteyn doesn't have a good bedside manner, isn't very thorough, didn't show any interest or active listening when I was describing my relevant medical history, and would interrupt me. He recommended medication that was contradictory to what I have already been prescribed (again with the whole "not actively listening" thing.) Obvious that he was just trying to get me out of his office as fast as possible. To give credit where credit is due: he did book me for a steroid injection, which was a good next step to address my spine issue. HOWEVER, he would not answer questions about what the long-term game plan was for treating my spine issues or managing pain. And lastly, he NEGLECTED to tell me that I could not go back to work the same day as the injection. He offered NO warnings as to possible symptoms / recovery time required for the injection. Unprofessional behavior at best, and DANGEROUS at worst. AVOID THIS DOCTOR.
I consider Dr. Kapsteyn to be one with great chairside manner. He is easy to talk with and questions are answered clearly. I would like my other specialists to be like him

Dr Reginal Kapteyn help me with the Sciatic nerve pain. He is very friendly and very professional. He gave me a cortisone shot in my back and medication for pain I strongly recommend Dr Reginal Kapteyn to others.
Dr. Kapteyn listened very carefully to my concerns and proposed solutions and actions for follow-up. He was not patronizing but met me on my educational level. We don't have a plan yet but i am confident that he will follow through.

The care I received from Dr Kapteyn was fast and direct. I had been referred by Anderson Clinic to their Pain Dr. Earliest available appointment was in early February. Called International and got appointment the next day. VHC followed through with rapid MRI. Went back for a super epidural that didn't work. Got an appointment to try and rupture one of the cyst found on the MRI. Referred back to Dr Murray for follow up surgery on my lower back. Have an appointment on February 3rd. Any help Dr Kapteyn can do to get me rapid scheduling for follow up surgery would be greatly appreciated.

I think Dr. Kapteyn-Pain is one of the best pain management doctors. I had emergency surgery on July 18. I had to have the ligaments in my thumb completely repaired with a cage and some screws. I was able to get an appointment to see Dr. Kapteyn two weeks after surgery. He is very understanding, caring and he listens. I feel like he genuinely cares about his patients and that is very hard to find in a doctor these days. Dr.Kapteyn explains everything thoroughly and has great bedside manner. If I could rate him 1 million stars I would! Dr. Kapteyn is a wonderful Doctor and I will continue to see him for any pain issues that I have..
