Steven Wrege, DPM, is a podiatrist at Foot & Ankle Specialists of New Mexico. At the practice’s locations in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, South Valley, and Edgewood, New Mexico, he proudly provides comprehensive foot and ankle care.
Dr. Wrege is a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, where he received his undergraduate degree in chemistry. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1988 from Des Moines University in Iowa before completing his residency at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque. He then went on to complete a fellowship with the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association.
Dr. Wrege is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery. Dr. Wrege has been president of the American Diabetes Association – Mountain States Region for Healthcare and Education, where he focused on the prevention of amputation in patients with diabetes. From 2010-2012, his peers elected him as president of the New Mexico Podiatric Medical Association.
In the medical review edition of Albuquerque The Magazine, Dr. Wrege has been consistently listed as one of the city’s best podiatrists. In 2010, a guide to America’s Top Podiatrists by Consumers Research Council of America also named Dr. Wrege one of the nation’s top podiatrists. He was named Podiatrist of the Year by New Mexico Podiatric Medical Association in 2013.
Dr. Wrege has been practicing in Albuquerque since 1992. He possesses the rare combination of an excellent surgeon and a friendly, caring, and down-to-earth personality. Dr. Wrege takes pride in treating his patients in the same way that he would treat his own family. Although he is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, rarely is surgery the first option for the majority of foot and ankle problems. Most of the time, he can get patients better without surgery.
When he’s away from the office, Dr. Wrege enjoys skiing, golfing, scuba diving, and traveling with his family. He is married to a native of Albuquerque, and they have two children.

After learning our insurance will be continued at the end of this year, Dr Wrege showed me how to help my husband, the patient, take care of his diabetic feet. He and his staff were very supportive and kind.
The doctor had a very informative, but comfortable chair side manner. He explained each step and looked at me to be sure that I understood.

Helped remove my ingrowns from both big toes. Was very professional and accommodating to my nerves; he was very communicative to what was going to happen and made sure I felt comfortable the whole.

Great diagnostic system. Had X-rays and ultrasound before seeing the doctor. In and out in 45 minutes. Dr. Wrege was very kind, conversational, and provided excellent guidance on rehabbing Achilles fasciitis.
