Timothy O’Brien, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon serving patients at Alpine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Bozeman, Montana.
Dr. O’Brien moved to Bozeman in 2003 after completing a fellowship at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. During his fellowship, Dr. O’Brien learned advanced techniques in knee surgery, including ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament repair and reconstruction, cartilage restoration procedures, meniscal surgery, and high tibial osteotomy under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Steadman, a pioneer and world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. William Sterett, the head physician for the United States Women’s Ski Team.
He also studied and performed advanced shoulder techniques with Dr. Richard Hawkins, an internationally known shoulder surgeon and founder of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. During his fellowship, Dr. O’Brien worked with an array of athletes, ranging from high school sports to professionals, including providing medical services for the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and US ski teams.
Dr. O’Brien brought many of these techniques to Southwestern Montana. He and his partner, Mark Deibert, MD, brought innovative ideas such as hamstring and cadaver ACL reconstruction to the area, offering less post-operative pain and easier rehabilitation for patients. He was the first in Bozeman to perform single and double row arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder procedures for shoulder instability and preventing dislocation, as well as reverse total shoulder replacement for rotator cuff arthropathy, a condition with previously few good surgical treatments.
He continues to stay up-to-date with the latest treatments and techniques in orthopedic surgery through his professional affiliations and travel with national and international societies and organizations. Patients say Dr. O’Brien is very professional and always takes time to explain all the treatment options available.
Dr. O’Brien lives in Bozeman with his wife, Kristen, and four children, Jack, Maeve, Rose, and Finn.

Dr. O’Brien, “Biz” and Virginia have provided me excellent care including my diagnosis, the surgery (rotator cuff repair) and follow-up. The entire team is clearly very skilled but also shows great empathy as needed and levity when needed, as well. Their recommendation for my physical therapy has also been spot on. I would highly recommend this orthopedic group to anyone. A friendly greeting at the front desk starts the visit on a good note. The medical staff is very friendly, helpful and happy to take time to talk through issues. Dr O’Brien and his team are friendly and efficient. A decade ago Dr. O’Brien repaired my right knee. Now he is guiding me in strengthing and perhaps replacing my painful left hip joint.

Wish I could give a 10 star for our experience with Dr O’Brien and his staff! My family wouldn’t go anywhere else in the country. We’ve had multiple surgeries with Dr O’Brien and all have been top notch care and quality. Yesterday’s experience was the same. Even though extremely busy they took the time to check in with us and keep us updated with clear communication. We feel like well cared for family, which helps so much when you get hurt playing outside. Thank you for creating and sharing that with Bozeman!

I have been to Alpine Orthopedics for a knee and shoulder. I felt very well attended to by those that checked me in, techs, nurses and Dr. O’brien. Their talk is straight forward and questions are answered thoroughly and with visual plastic skeletons and with X-rays. They are kind and capable folks.
We traveled from Billings just for Alpine. From scheduling to post op care everyone is amazing and attentive to your needs!
Dr. Reichard’s staff were very pleasant & professional helpful his nurse staff put me at ease from the beginning and throughout the entire process. After Meeting Dr. Reichard i realized I had the right man to do reconstruction of my foot. I would recommend Dr. Reichard to anyone it was good customer service!
