I had a lot of serious complications following cataract surgery and as a result I am very anxious about any abnormalities I experience with my eyes. I am scheduled to go out of town and started experiencing symptoms that I knew wShow moreere not normal so I called and was able to get a same day appointment before I left. He assured me that the eye was fine and that it was safe to travel and that the symptoms would resolve within a week. I appreciated being able to get in before I left and to have that peace of mind.
Dr. Hsia is great, friendly, very skilled, and can be trusted. I just had cataract surgery in both eyes 4 weeks apart performed by Dr. Hsia. Both operations went well and I can see so much better. No pain or complications. It's moShow moredern miracles! Four stars instead of five is because there's room for improvements, in customer service and wait time. Most staff are friendly and helpful but a few are cold, unpleasant, and inattentive. It would be nice if appointments can be on-time or the wait-time can be shorter. It would also be helpful to have online payment options.
Yen Cheng (Joey) Hsia, MD, is an experienced provider at Diablo Eye Associates in Walnut Creek, California. He is a native of the Bay Area and completed his medical school at the Case Western Reserve University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor. He completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and was awarded the prestigious Heed’s fellowship. He completed an additional glaucoma fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
After his training, Dr. Hsia served as the assistant professor of ophthalmology at UCSF and the medical director of the UCSF Berkeley outpatient center. He is excited to be part of Diablo Eye Associates and be able to serve the patients in the East Bay and beyond. Dr. Hsia is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an active member of the American Glaucoma Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Hsia specializes in cataract and glaucoma surgeries. His expertise encompasses complex cataract surgeries, intraocular lens-related complications, including lens exchange and secondary intraocular lens, traditional and novel glaucoma surgeries, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, and complex anterior segment surgeries and reconstruction. He was the first surgeon at UCSF to perform numerous novel glaucoma surgeries and artificial iris implantation. Dr. Hsia has published numerous research manuscripts and book chapters for a glaucoma textbook. He is a frequently invited lecturer for regional and national meetings.
In his free time, Dr. Hsia enjoys cooking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and spending time with his family.

Office did a great job in accommodating my request for same day emergency appointment. I was seen by doctor Hsia. He identified the cause of inner eye pain, and provided medication for pain treatment. I am feeling much better on the next day, and pain is almost gone. Michael F

Very impressed with Dr. Hsia. He is very professional and knowledgeable. He takes the time to answer patients questions and explains things in terms that can be understood. I had a detached retina in December 2023, and he immediately contacted Bay Area Retina Associates to get me quickly scheduled for surgery. Dr. Hsia will be performing my cataract surgery in April 2024. I was also impressed with technician Stephanie. She was very thorough conducting my pre-op exam and took the time to explain the process in terms that I could understand.

Arrived at appointment time and was called in right away for preliminary exam. Doctor Hsia completed the exam moments after receiving eye drops. Waiting area and examination rooms were extremely clean and un-cluttered. The view from the waiting area is spectacular.

I was nervous but Dr Hsai was positive and knew I was nervous but he assumed me that I would be okay.
