Mehrine Shaikh, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Fairfax Cataract and Retina in Fairfax, Virginia. Though I was born in Brooklyn, New York, I consider myself a local since I spent the majority of my childhood in Athens, Georgia.

It was during my high school years there that I became interested in medicine and spent the next 14 years of my life training all over the country in amazing cities like Boston, Detroit, Denver, and Portland, Oregon.

Despite my love of travel, I always knew I wanted to come back to the Southeast and so, in 2009, I came full circle and returned to Atlanta. Since returning, I have acquired valuable clinical and surgical experience with a highly regarded local group practice and most recently, a national healthcare organization.

I am especially passionate about ophthalmology because it is a patient­-focused field where I can interact with teens and adults of all ages on a daily basis, and at the same time, apply my technical skills by performing microsurgery to improve vision. Elson Lai, MD, is a board-certified eye physician and surgeon and proud to serve men and women throughout the San Gabriel Valley at Rosemead Eye Center in Rosemead, California. A product of nearby Arcadia High School, Dr. Lai went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in molecular and cell biology. It was as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley that he first developed a fascination with the eyes.
After graduation, Dr. Lai attended the Chicago Medical School where he was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, which is given to the top 10% of medical students. He then completed his internship in internal medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he served as surgical chief. This is the largest program in the country and known for its high surgical volume and pathology.

Dr. Lai trained in a number of innovative surgical techniques during his ophthalmology residency, including intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgery. His residency class was the first to start using the multifocal and toric lens as residents. This technique involves replacing the natural lens with advanced technology lenses. These lenses not only fix cataracts but correct astigmatism, near or farsightedness, and presbyopia, thus allowing patients to be less dependent on glasses.

Dr. Lai’s interests include cataract and refractive surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and treatment and management of glaucoma. Dr. Cohen has also published articles in leading ophthalmology publications and authored chapters in various books.

Ben Z. Cohen, MD, founded Retina Associates of New York in 1983 in Manhattan, New York. This established the start of his mission to provide patients with personalized and focused care using the most advanced medical treatments available to address diseases of the retina.

The practice has since grown to include fully equipped satellite offices in Queens and in New Rochelle, which serve patients in Southern Westchester and the Bronx. Dr. Cohen took his vision to another level when he opened The Retinal Ambulatory Surgery Center of New York in 2006, which is conveniently adjacent to the Manhattan office and is equipped with the most advanced technology available.

Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his postgraduate internship at Long Island Jewish Hospital. He underwent ophthalmology residency training at the University of Chicago and then completed a fellowship in macular disorders at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. He completed a second fellowship in surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School and a third in clinical research at the Eye Research Institute of the Retina Foundation.

He remains an active member of many professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Heed Society, Schepens Society, American College of Surgeons, New York State Ophthalmological Society, and the American Society of Retinal Specialists which was formerly the Vitreous Society. Dr. Cohen has also published articles in leading ophthalmology publications and authored chapters in various books.
