Dr. Timothy Lee is a board-certified ophthalmologist who opened the Eye Care Center of Kauai together with his partner, Dr. Layne Hashimoto, in Lihue, Hawaii, in 2007. From the start, his goal was to build a family-oriented eye center that offered comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages, and he has achieved that goal, specializing in managing diverse eye disease from cataracts, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma and macular degeneration, to pterygium removal and pediatric eye disease.
Dr. Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, then received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He went on to complete an internship in internal medicine at the Long Beach VA Medical Center, then an ophthalmology residency at the University of California at Irvine College of Medicine. Dr. Lee worked at the Kauai Medical Clinic for 20 years before going into private practice and opening the Eye Care Center of Kauai with Dr. Hashimoto.
Dr. Lee loves listening to and playing music of all genres. When he was invited to perform in Aloha Medical Mission’s “Four Doctors and a Patient” piano fundraiser in Honolulu, he took inspiration from the movie “The Pianist” and played Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor, delivering such an outstanding performance that he went on to perform in the next three piano concern fundraisers.
In 2007, he helped raise funds for music scholarships by performing a solo piano program for a sold-out audience at the Mokihana Club’s Winter Concert on Kauai. Dr. Lee went on to organize and perform in the Wilcox Hospital Foundation’s fundraiser, “Music and Medicine,” which included a discussion about how music interrelates with medicine. Dr. Lee is fascinated by the healing power of music and uses a variety of musical selections to calm his patients during eye surgery.
Dr. Lee and his wife Leticia reside in Poipu, Kauai, with their daughter Bonnie. When he’s not spending time with his wife and daughter, Dr. Lee enjoys caring for his menagerie of family pets, including a Moluccan cockatoo named Steinway, several Holland lop rabbits, numerous Japanese koi, and several marine and freshwater aquaria at his home and office.
Dr. Jean Shein is a board-certified ophthalmologist who joined the Eye Care Center of Kauai, in Lihue, Hawaii, in 2009. Dr. Shein perfectly matches the family focus of the Eye Care Center of Kauai, as she’s fellowship trained in pediatric eye diseases. She also offers cosmetic services for adults who want to maintain their appearance, such as SkinMedica facial peels, Botox treatments, and Latisse for lengthening eyelashes.
After graduating cum laude from Dartmouth College, Dr. Shein received her medical degree from New York University. Her love for Hawaii was realized during her internship year at the University of Hawaii. She finished her training in ophthalmology at New York University and at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, where she served as chief resident in her senior year. Then she refined her skill during her fellowship at the University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Shein has the respect of her patients and the community, as shown by the fact that she won Best Doctors in Hawaii for 3 consecutive years. When she’s not caring for the eye health of her patients, Dr. Shein enjoys spending as much time as possible with her husband and children.

I welcome you to our website, and hopefully, at some point, to our office located in Encino, California. The purpose of this website is to give potential patients some basic information about my office and myself, David Paikal, MD. My practice specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology, where I favor conservative approaches, striving to be true to the bioethical tenet of “first do no harm.”
My staff and I will do everything possible to take the best care of you. The reason we can do so is because we love what we do: helping people to see better. Sometimes, that means admitting that we don’t have all the answers and referring you elsewhere. No one physician knows it all, and my staff and I are fortunate to have strong relationships with various sub-specialists, including academicians at universities, should the need arise.
In the great city of Los Angeles, we are blessed to have many world-class ophthalmologists, and therefore, your eyes will more than likely be in the best of hands with the majority of eye-care providers. Ultimately, your decision as a patient on whom to choose will really rest on who you feel most comfortable with, and where you can achieve the kind of patient-doctor relationship you are looking for.
My educational background is attached for those of you who are interested. I wish you health and happiness.
Sincerely,
David Paikal, M.D. Diplomate American Board of Ophthalmology Assistant Clinical Professor, UCLA Stein Eye Institute

QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH DR. BART
How did you decide on a career in medicine?
I decided to become an ophthalmologist when I was a junior in high school. Getting my first pair of eyeglasses had a surprisingly profound effect on my life. Clear vision gave me a new — found confidence and sense of well-being. In my case, proper vision meant more than just seeing things clearer; its effect was energizing and transformative. I have always wanted the same experience for each my patients. Excellent vision can offer a new lease on life.
At Stanford University, I studied human biology, with a concentration on vision and perception. I was fascinated by the human visual system. The more I learned about ophthalmology, the more I realized how well-suited I was for this specialty. Ophthalmology requires precision and attention to detail. Complex analytical thought is a necessity. Eye surgery calls for very fine dexterity as well as an aptitude for 3D mechanics.Fortunately, these characteristics came to me naturally. No one from my childhood was surprised when I became an ophthalmologist.(!)
What do you find fulfilling about your work?
I love practicing medicine — the fascinating complexity of the human body and the continual innovations of modern medicine. But the most fulfilling aspect of my work is seeing my patients living healthier, more productive, and happier lives. I enjoy helping others see clearly, treating disease and eliminating pain. It may be an elaborate exam for an eyeglass prescription employing refined techniques many doctors don’t use. It may be performing a procedure or giving medication that stops a disease process and restores good health. Seeing both their improved vision and their resultant joy is satisfying.
Tell us about the culture and values of your practice.
Our practice is patient-centered. We work as a team to ensure that the most advanced medicine is combined with the best experience in our office. We want each patient to feel comfortable, informed, and happy with the care we provide.
What makes your practice different from others’?
My patients tell me I am more communicative than other doctors they have seen. I welcome questions and give thorough explanations. I invite patient participation in forming treatment plans. I get to know my patients. My patients choose me because I care.
