Thomas J. Kremen, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with advanced subspecialty training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery. He cares for patients of all activity levels—from professional athletes to individuals simply looking to stay active and pain-free.
Dr. Kremen has extensive experience as a team physician at the highest levels of sport. He has worked with organizations across the country and internationally, including Duke University Athletics, U.S. Men’s National Team Soccer, LA Galaxy, USA Basketball, and the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team. He currently serves as a team physician for UCLA Athletics, the South Bay Lakers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Chargers.
While he has helped elite athletes perform at their peak, Dr. Kremen brings that same level of care and attention to every patient he treats. His focus is simple: help you recover efficiently, restore function, and get back to the activities that matter most to you.
Dr. Kremen specializes in treating shoulder and knee injuries, as well as a wide range of sports-related and overuse conditions. He combines advanced surgical techniques with the latest evidence-based, non-surgical treatments to create individualized care plans. Just as importantly, he emphasizes injury prevention—helping patients reduce the risk of future problems.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kremen is a federally funded clinician-scientist actively involved in research aimed at improving how soft tissues—such as tendons, ligaments, and cartilage—heal after injury. This work allows him to deliver elite care today while building the therapies of tomorrow—helping patients recover faster, perform better, and stay active longer.
Dr. Kremen earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was captain of the NCAA Division I men’s swimming team. He received his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UCLA. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Duke University.
After several years helping build the orthopedic program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Kremen returned to UCLA, where he is now a full-time faculty member.
He remains actively involved in advancing the field through research, publications, and national presentations, and maintains memberships in leading professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Jonathan H. Koenig, MD, is a Board Certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon at Los Angeles Pediatric Orthopaedics serving the Brentwood community on the Westside of Los Angeles. Though Dr. Koenig specializes in treating children and young adults, he’s happy to help any patient who still feels young at heart.
Growing up on Long Island in the suburbs of New York City, Dr. Koenig was a tri-sport athlete who went on to play varsity lacrosse at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale with a degree in the history of science and medicine. He then returned to New York City to earn his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.
Dr. Koenig completed a five-year orthopaedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan's Upper East Side — home of America’s first official sports medicine department. His training included rotations at world-leading institutions like Boston Children’s Hospital, R Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Dr. Koenig served as chief resident during his final year and completed a traveling fellowship at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Leaving New York City for sunny Southern California, Dr. Koenig finished a one-year fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis surgery at the world-renowned Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. He’s honored to bring his wealth of knowledge and extensive experience to the Westside of Los Angeles, where he resides with his wife, Dani - a native Angeleno. They enjoy spending time with their young daughter - Harlow, newborn son - Hudson, as well as their furst born - Woody, a golden retriever.
As a former athlete and orthopaedic patient himself, Dr. Koenig has a personal understanding of all aspects of the care he provides. From sports-related injuries like ACL tears or patella dislocations as well as broken bones or limb deformities and joint pains, he makes sure that every patient receives prompt, highly individualized treatment. He’s also happy to provide emergency care for traumatic injuries as they arise.
“Dr Koenig, was great, we did not have to wait and he was very good at putting my 5 year old daughter at ease, as well as explaining everything to her and to me. Would highly recommend!”

Welcome to the practice of William Sheppard, MD, MPH, in Santa Monica, California. As an expert orthopedic & neurological spine surgeon, I and my staff use our years of spine surgery experience to deliver lasting pain relief, improved mobility, and a better quality of life to our patients.
Our office is inside the UCLA Health Spine Center. Ample on-site parking is available, and we offer cutting-edge diagnostics, including X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans.
The collaborative treatment process we use emphasizes patient participation and feedback. Instead of making blanket treatment recommendations, we dedicate time to our patients, listening to their symptoms, concerns, and goals. We use that information to develop outcome-oriented treatment plans.
People from all over Los Angeles visit us for our spine expertise. We regularly diagnose and treat common back problems, including degenerative spinal disorders like scoliosis, spinal stenosis, and spinal disc herniation.
Rather than relying on open surgery, we primarily recommend minimally invasive surgery. This looks different for each patient, but I specialize in several techniques, including cervical spine surgery, cervical spine replacement, lumbar spine surgery, laminoplasty, robotic surgery, and endoscopic spine surgery.
Minimally invasive spine surgery provides various benefits. It requires less anesthesia, causes less blood loss, and uses smaller incisions that heal quickly. It allows patients to return to their lives quicker and risks significantly fewer complications.
Don’t let back or neck problems keep you from living your best life. Take the first step toward pain relief today. Call the practice of William Sheppard, MD, to schedule a new-patient appointment, or book your visit online.
