Spending time with patients and getting to know them beyond a diagnosis is what first inspired me to pursue psychiatry. During my years at Berea College, I learned the true power of human connection. As part of my labor assignment, I visited nursing homes and spent time sitting and talking with residents. Each visit, their faces would brighten as they shared stories, dreams, and memories. Those conversations brought joy not only to them—but also to me. They taught me the profound importance of listening with intention and seeing people for who they are, not just their current circumstances.
When I entered medical school, I naturally gravitated toward psychiatry because it allowed me to connect with patients on a deeper level—understanding their fears, motivations, hopes, and goals.
I chose to go into the counseling profession to help others who struggle with addiction or mental health disorders. I am passionate about providing empathetic support while delivering high quality patient care. There was a time that I struggled with my own addiction and mental health issues. When I finally got sober, my goal was to help others who share those struggles. I am now nearing my 12th year of sobriety and look forward to continuing my passion of working to help others. Some of the things I enjoy outside of work include spending time with my family, raising chickens, growing my own vegetables, and developing my spiritual relationship with God.
