Charles Haggerty, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics in Wasilla, Alaska. He specializes in shoulder arthroscopy and total shoulders.
Dr. Haggerty went to college at Johns Hopkins University, earned a master's degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and then went to Loyola Medical School in Chicago. His orthopedic residency was in San Antonio, Texas, with the U.S. Air Force. After finishing his training in 2008, he was assigned as the chief orthopedic physician at Osan Air Force Base, South Korea. Upon finishing this assignment in 2009, he was transferred to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he provided orthopedic care for veterans, cadets, and active-duty military. During his time at the Air Force Academy, he was a team physician for multiple collegiate teams, including Varsity Football and Hockey.
In 2012, Dr. Haggerty deployed to Afghanistan as the Commander of the 966 Forward Surgical Team, where he provided wartime trauma care to U.S. Soldiers and NATO Allies. His efforts in Afghanistan earned him numerous awards, including a Bronze Star. After returning to Colorado Springs and finishing his military service, he was Honorably Discharged from the United States Air Force in 2014. He then spent most of 2015 in three French Shoulder Fellowships, studying the latest open and arthroscopic shoulder techniques. In addition to his expertise with shoulder surgery, his interests include orthopedic sports medicine, hip and knee joint replacement, knee arthroscopy, and orthopedic trauma.
Dr. Haggerty returns to Alaska to be with his wife Dr. April Arseneau, a local Chugiak High School graduate, and their daughter, Samantha. He is passionate about mountain biking, snowboarding, and learning the secrets to great Alaskan fishing. He looks forward to providing state of the art orthopedic care to Alaskans and serving his community.
Gregory Strohmeyer, MD,is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics in Wasilla, Alaska. He was born and raised right here in Palmer, Alaska. He is the Matanuska Susitna Valley’s only specialty-trained fracture surgeon.
After graduating from Colony High School, where he was a four-year varsity letter hockey player, Dr. Strohmeyer attended Montana State University, where he studied biochemistry and graduated with high honors. He continued on to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, for medical school. Dr. Strohmeyer completed his orthopedic residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he received a broad education in orthopedic surgery. After residency, due to his interest in broken bones, he pursued an additional year of training in orthopedic trauma with the orthopedic trauma surgeons of Northern California in Roseville, California. During his fellowship year, Dr. Strohmeyer studied the most up-to-date techniques for the treatment of complex fractures in the upper and lower extremities, as well as the pelvis and acetabulum. He gained experience treating post-traumatic complications, including non-unions (where the bone doesn’t heal), malunions (where the bones heal in an abnormal position), post-operative infections, and post-traumatic arthritis. His fellowship also gave him expertise in hip arthroplasty surgery, including the direct anterior approach for total hip replacement. In addition to treating fractures, Dr. Strohmeyer’s interests include total knee replacement, rotator cuff repairs, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, osteochondral allograft transplantation, foot and ankle surgery, pediatric orthopedics, and hand surgery.
Throughout Dr. Strohmeyer’s education, he has been active in research and has been published in multiple journals, including Orthopaedic Knowledge Online Journal, Foot and Ankle International, Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
Dr. Strohmeyer is excited to be home in Palmer and is accompanied by his wife, Cindy, who was also raised in the Mat-Su Valley. They are joined by their three children.When not practicing medicine, Dr. Strohmeyer enjoys hunting, fishing, flying, snow machining, playing hockey, snowboarding, and mountain biking. He is a two-time finisher in the Iron Dog Pro Class (2021, 2022). He is eager to have the opportunity to return home and serve the community he was raised in.
Garret Schuchart, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon practicing at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics in Wasilla, Alaska.
Born and raised on a cattle ranch in south Texas, Dr. Schuchart’s education began at Hardin-Simmons University where he was a collegiate tight end on the football team while majoring in biology with a minor in biochemistry. He continued at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock, Texas, for medical school. Dr. Schuchart completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Temple, Texas (ranked the number one major teaching hospital by Fortune/PINC in 2023), where he was well-trained in all fields of orthopedic surgery. He then pursued additional training with Sonoran Spine Research and Education Foundation in Tempe, Arizona, where he had broad exposure to the latest innovations in spine surgery, including robotic-assisted spine surgery, minimally invasive procedures, motion preservation surgeries, and complex deformity reconstruction. His fellowship gave him expertise in spinal procedures from the skull to the pelvis including anterior, lateral, and posterior approaches.
Dr. Schuchart’s wife, Kami, is also a native Texan, collegiate track athlete, and Speech Language Pathologist. Married in 2014, they have three beautiful children. In their spare time, both Dr. Schuchart and his wife are avid hunters, hikers, skiers, and enjoy anything related to the outdoors. They look forward to joining and serving the Mat-Su Valley community.
Jimmy Shaha, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon practicing at Pioneer Peak Orthopedics in Wasilla, Alaska. He specializes in sports medicine with an emphasis on problems from the shoulder to the fingertips.
Originally from the state of Utah, Dr. Shaha graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University, earning a degree in Neuroscience before enrolling at the University of Texas at Southwestern for Medical School. While there, Dr. Shaha earned membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha society. After graduation, he completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Shaha served five years on active duty in the U.S. Army, being stationed in Seoul, South Korea, and Landstuhl, Germany. In 2019, he deployed to Afghanistan as the lone orthopedic surgeon in Kabul. Most recently, Dr. Shaha completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. During that time, he worked with numerous collegiate and professional sports teams in the Phoenix area, including providing coverage for Arizona State University and the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL.
Dr. Shaha has been involved in research that has earned the O’Donoghue Award and the Hughston Award, the two highest research awards in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. His work on shoulder instability was also included as one of the 30 most influential studies in the first 50 years of The American Journal of Sports Medicine, the preeminent journal for Orthopedic Sports Medicine.
When not working, Dr. Shaha spends his free time with his wife, Erin, and their four daughters. They enjoy traveling, biking, and skiing as a family. He also loves to run, having completed multiple marathons, including Boston, as well as a full-distance Ironman Triathlon. The Shaha family is excited to discover all that Alaska has to offer and to be part of an area with an amazing culture and community.
