Dr. Melendez began his professional education at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in industrial microbiology. He subsequently moved to the United States and enrolled at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. 

Following graduation, Dr. Melendez accepted a residency position at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania.
