Dr. Biren Shah, DPM, provides expert foot and ankle care at Midwest Foot and Ankle Associates in Rockford, Illinois. Specializing in reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, and diabetic foot care, he offers treatments such as arthroscopy, limb salvage, and flat foot reconstruction. Dr. Shah earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering in India before relocating to the U.S. to pursue nuclear medicine and attend Barry University for medical school. During his residency at Mercy Hospital in Miami, he trained in sports medicine under Dr. James Losito, treating athletes from the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University of Chicago, Dr. Mahmood decided to take a year to complete a Masters in Public Health from Benedictine University to equip him with a better understanding of a different viewpoint of medicine. From here, he completed his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine (formerly known as Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine). He then completed a three-year surgical residency at Jesse Brown VA in Chicago, specializing in foot and ankle surgery where he served as chief resident. During his residency, he presented peer-reviewed abstracts at multiple surgical and wound care conferences. His research won an award at the Symposium for Advanced Wound Care in 2018.

Dr. Daniel M. Parise is board certified in podiatric medicine (ABPM) and has a strong background in wound care. He provides compassionate treatment with a focus on the patient and a desire to help patients return to a pain free life. Dr. Parise starts with a conversation to understand the patients individual needs and then he works together with the patient to create a realistic and comprehensive plan of care. Dr. Parise is a graduate of Miami University Ohio with dual degrees in Zoology and Spanish. He then graduated from Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine before completing a three year podiatric medical and surgical residency at University Hospitals – Richmond Heights where he became well versed in treating bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, heel pain/plantar fasciitis, diabetic care and limb salvage, flat feet, ingrown nails, ulcers, warts, and many more pedal ailments. James Appleton, DPM, FACFAS, is a board certified podiatrist and the newest partner of the Rhode Island Foot Care team. He currently sees patients at the practice’s locations in North Providence and Newport, and Rhode Island.

Dr. Appleton is a native Rhode Islander born in Providence. He attended Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts, from 2000-­2004, and received his bachelor’s degree in biology with a focus in computer science. While attending Assumption University, he was actively involved in intramural sports and was a member of the baseball team. After obtaining a degree in biology, he attended the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and received his medical degree in 2010. 

Dr. Appleton completed his podiatric medical and surgical residency from Roger Williams Medical Center, a program with an emphasis on forefoot and rearfoot reconstruction as well as diabetic wound care and limb salvage. There, he trained under many local podiatrists, as well as orthopedic surgeons, and served as the chief resident in his final year of training.

She went on to complete a 3 year surgical and medical residency at West Houston Medical Center in Houston, Texas where she was privileged the position of Chief Resident. Dr. Jacoby is a Podiatrist that specializes in congenital, traumatic and long standing deformities of the foot and ankle. She enjoys stem cell therapy, complex wounds and advanced treatment options. She is Board Qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and certified in Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy.

Brian Pontarelli, DPM, is a board certified foot and ankle surgeon at Rhode Island Foot Care’s locations in Cumberland, North Providence, Cumberland & Johnston, Rhode Island as well as Norfolk, Massachusetts. 

Dr. Pontarelli received his Bachelor of Science in biology and minor in business administration from Providence College in Rhode Island. He earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. Afterward, he completed his residency and surgical training at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.

He performs all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery and has a passion for sports medicine. Dr. Pontarelli is also an avid diabetic wound care specialist. He is a founding member and staff podiatrist of a local wound care center and has helped heal many difficult wounds utilizing cutting edge technology such as hyperbaric oxygen chambers and synthesized skin derivatives.
