Academic and Professional Roles
Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Chiu served as an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, where he was recruited to help reduce amputation rates by focusing on diabetic limb salvage. He has also held leadership positions in professional organizations, serving as Treasurer for the ACFAS Big West Region and as a member of the Podiatry Advisory Committee for the New Mexico Medical Board.

Dr. Chiu is recognized nationally for his work in diabetic foot care and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and online articles in major podiatric and medical journals. His research has focused on limb salvage techniques, wound healing, and the impact of vascular disease on diabetic foot complications. He is actively involved in ongoing clinical research, including investigations into improving surgical techniques for minor foot amputations and minimally invasive techniques to healing chronic diabetic foot ulcers.

His pioneering technique for percutaneous medial band plantar fasciotomy has provided a safer alternative for treating stubborn foot ulcers, making a significant impact in the field of limb salvage.
Dr. Chiu is also one of the very few podiatrists in New Mexico offering orthoplastic reconstruction for complex bone and soft tissue problems in the lower extremity. He specializes in complex diabetic foot and ankle reconstruction, including use of external fixation techniques and flap surgery such as fasciocutaneous and muscle flaps for large soft tissue defects. His expertise in this highly specialized field allows him to offer advanced reconstructive options for patients with severe diabetic foot complications, trauma, and infection, providing them with alternatives to major amputations.

In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Chiu is a co-founder of the Foot and Ankle Surgery Academy (FASA), an online video library dedicated to the education and training of podiatry students, residents, and practicing podiatrists worldwide. His passion for education drove him to learn filmmaking, video editing, and audio production, investing thousands of hours into content creation while balancing a demanding schedule. His dedication ensures that FASA provides high-quality instructional content, helping professionals enhance their surgical skills and advance their knowledge base in foot and ankle surgery.
Dedicated to advancing the field of podiatry, Dr. Chiu frequently lectures at national conferences, including the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions. He shares his expertise in surgical offloading techniques, wound care innovations, and diabetic foot management. Since moving from UNM, he has been actively involved in the training of the NMVA podiatry residents, ensuring that the next generation of podiatrists is equipped with the latest knowledge and skills in foot and ankle surgery.

Personal Interests
Dr. Chiu is married and has three daughters who are passionate about dance. They participate in ballet, hip-hop, jazz, team dance, and recently started ice skating lessons. His three dogs Marv, Harry and Kevin were named after characters from his wife's favorite movie, Home Alone.
Although he grew up in San Francisco, Dr. Chiu never had much interest in watching professional sports. However, after spending four years in Philadelphia and marrying a woman from Pottstown, PA, he became a dedicated Eagles fan. Go birds!

Dr. Jacob, originally from Milton, Wisconsin, received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater. She continued her education at Kent State University in Cleveland, previously known as the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, earning her doctorate in podiatric medicine and surgery. During her residency, Dr. Jacob trained extensively at University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic, as well as at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She now teaches surgical residents in the metropolitan Detroit area and local high school students.
Following residency, Dr. Jacob trained in advanced surgical techniques, including ankle joint replacements and minimally invasive surgery. She is especially passionate about her clinical interests including: pediatrics, total ankle replacements, complex foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, new technology, ankle sprains, and arthroscopic procedures.
Dr. Jacob enjoys art, hiking, archery, and gardening when not caring for her patients. She shares furry children with her husband Tom. Their dogs, Pepper & Cocoa, will sometimes be in the office greeting patients and easing their anxiety.

Andrew Bernhard, DPM, is a foot and ankle surgeon practicing at Tussey Mountain Foot & Ankle Specialists, located in State College, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bernhard grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated with an undergraduate degree from John Carroll University in biology and from podiatric medical school at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. From there, he completed a three-year rearfoot and ankle certified medical and surgical residency at Kingwood Medical Center, part of the Greater Texas Educational Foundation, in Houston, Texas. He met Dr. Kaitlyn Bernhard while in medical school, and they have been working separately in private practice in Colorado since residency. Together, they have two young children and opened Tussey Mountain Foot & Ankle Specialists. Dr. Bernhard is an avid skier, reader, and disc golfer, a competent mountain biker and hiker, and a board game geek.
