Chart less, live more Tebra webinar recap
  • 68% of providers believe AI can improve their practice, but only 37% are using it — the main barrier is lack of understanding, not lack of interest.
  • AI users report saving 30+ minutes daily, and 89% have positive or neutral experiences with the technology.
  • Start small with admin tasks like note-taking or review responses — providers want AI as a helper, not a decision-maker.

Documentation overload is eroding provider work-life balance, but AI for medical practices is already providing relief.

In Tebra’s free webinar, “Chart less, live more: Reclaim your time with AI,Hannah Abrams, Product Marketing Manager, and Cait Batzinger, Principal Product Manager, used survey data from over 100 providers to reveal the gap between AI’s potential and current adoption — and showed practical ways to bridge it.

Watch the webinar recording below to learn what they uncovered, and review our guide below for strategies to start using.

Most providers want AI, but few are using it

Most independent providers see the value in AI — 68% of providers say it could improve their medical practice — yet only 37% are using it. The primary barrier isn’t lack of interest; 48% say a lack of understanding is holding them back.

You don’t have to be an early adopter to benefit. As Batzinger put it, “You’re not alone in being cautiously curious, and you’re not behind either. Being thoughtful about this is exactly the right approach.”

Where AI works today: Admin, not diagnoses

AI’s most useful role in independent practices is practical: handling the tedious admin work that eats into your evenings.

“We’re really focused on helping providers reduce their mental load and gain more time back,” said Abrams.

Today’s most effective use cases include:

  • Ambient note-taking and documentation support
  • Appointment scheduling and reminders
  • Responding to patient reviews and messages

These tools don’t make clinical decisions (yet), but they act as digital assistants, giving you back the time and mental space to focus on patient care.

The documentation drain is real — and solvable

Charting is necessary, but it’s also one of the biggest drains on provider time and energy.

According to Tebra’s research, 88% of providers say repetitive documentation is their top time-waster and 89% spend more than 30 minutes after hours finishing charts. Even more telling: 53% spend over 90 minutes daily on documentation, with 41% dedicating more than a quarter of their workday to notes.

But providers already using AI for documentation are seeing meaningful results.

Early adopters report saving 30+ minutes per day and reducing after-hours work. Over half report less after-hours charting, and 89% say they’ve had positive or neutral experiences.

Most importantly, clinicians stay in control — through AI drafts that you review and approve. The result? Less “pajama time” charting and more balance in your day.

Overcoming honest concerns about AI in your medical practice

Skeptical about AI in your practice? You’re not alone. Cost, privacy, workflow disruption, and accuracy are top concerns for providers considering adopting AI.

But as Batzinger shared during the webinar, these concerns can be addressed with a thoughtful approach:

  • Start with one use case. Tackle a single admin task like note-taking or responding to reviews before expanding.
  • Stay in the driver’s seat. Choose tools that help you solve real problems and let you review and approve every output.
  • Look for built-in workflows. Tools embedded into your EHR are easier to start using and train your team on.
  • Balance cost with time savings. 65% of providers say saving at least 30 minutes a day would make the cost of adopting AI worth it.

You don’t have to start big — you just have to be deliberate.

What to look for in your first AI tool

Not all AI is built for medical practices. The best tools fit your workflow, protect patient data, and give you the final say.

Here’s what to prioritize:

  • Workflow fit. If it doesn’t save you time in your existing systems, it’s not worth it.
  • Transparent functionality. You should understand how the tool works and how outputs are generated.
  • Compliance and security. HIPAA compliance isn’t optional — confirm it’s built in.
  • Provider control. You need full visibility and editing rights. AI should support your judgement, not replace it.

Tebra’s AI Note Assist exemplifies this approach. It listens ambiently during patient visits, drafts structured SOAP notes, and lets you review and edit before finalizing.

As Jennifer Sigler, WHNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, shared, “I got to go home early yesterday because of AI Note Assist.”

Bonus value: Improve your online reputation without more work

Nearly 94% of patients consult online reviews when choosing a provider. But responding to those reviews, especially across multiple platforms, takes time most practices don’t have.

That’s where AI can step in again.

Tebra’s AI Review Replies and AI Review Insights tools help you stay responsive without adding to your workload:

  • AI Review Replies generates HIPAA-compliant responses in seconds that you can review and customize — reducing time spent replying to reviews by 90%.
  • AI Review Insights summarizes feedback trends right in your EHR, helping you quickly identify patterns across your team or locations.

Early adopters are accepting more than 80% of AI-generated replies — requiring little to no editing before posting.

Final takeaways: One small step can change everything

AI doesn’t require overhauling your medical practice. Start with one use case that saves 10 minutes daily — documentation is often the best place to begin.

You’re not late to the game. Most providers are still exploring what’s possible.
