CHART OF THE WEEK
The February 2024 cyberattack on Change Healthcare has had a profound financial effect on independent healthcare practices, with 80% of survey respondents reporting lost revenue.
This has been exacerbated by their inability to submit claims, collect patient co-pays, or verify eligibility for benefits, forcing many practices into severe financial distress. 55% of respondents have even resorted to using personal funds to cover operational costs, with significant concerns about potential bankruptcy looming.
The cyberattack has also disrupted essential services such as electronic payments, e-prescribing, and medical claims processing. To cope, many affected practices have implemented both manual and electronic workarounds to manage claims and maintain operations.
Despite these efforts, 25% still report being unable to obtain necessary support for electronic remittances, leading nearly half to seek alternative clearinghouses, often at high financial and operational costs.
We dive into the struggles independent practices face in our latest coverage.
