Dr. John Huffman, MD is a pain management physician practicing at Interventional Pain and Regenerative Medicine Specialists in Arlington, Virginia on the campus of the Virginia Hospital Center. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (1994 - present) with an additional Pain Medicine Certification (1996 - present).
Dr. Huffman completed his anesthesiology residency and pain medicine training at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. He was named chief resident during his final year of training, after which he remained on staff teaching as an assistant professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine until 1997.
Prior to joining Virginia Hospital Center, he served as the Medical Director of Pain Management at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, for over 22 years. His responsibilities included managing a staff of more than 25 medical professionals.
Dr. Huffman has extensive experience in all areas of pain medicine and has a special interest in Intrathecal Drug Delivery and Spinal Cord Stimulation, both procedures are surgically implantable technologies for use in the treatment of chronic pain. He has taught and published extensively on interventional pain management techniques and treatment of chronic pain. He remains active in research and routinely maintains his continuing medical education.
Dr. Huffman strongly supports a multi-disciplinary approach to patients suffering from chronic pain and recognizes the unique and individual nature of each patient’s pain and tailors their treatment accordingly. He believes in honesty and trust as the foundation for the patient-physician relationship.

Dr. Kapteyn received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, followed by a medical internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Kapteyn then pursued his residency at Georgetown University and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington D.C. He further honed his expertise through fellowship training in interventional pain at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr Kapteyn is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, pain medicine, and board eligible Hospice and Palliative care. A multidisciplinary, balanced approach to pain medicine is a hallmark of his care to bring improvement in function.
From 2009 to 2013, Dr. Kapteyn served as the Medical Director of Pain Medicine at Drake Hospital, a University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he served and at times led the medical executive committee and represented Drake on the drug planning and development committee. Kapteyn subsequently entered private practice with Orthopedic Associates Muskegon, where he worked until 2023. During his career, he also worked as a physician consultant with Hydrocision, and as the physician lead in the development of TenJet for minimally invasive tenotomies. Additionally, Dr. Kapteyn worked in hospice and palliative care with Harbor Hospice,and served as an independent director and science consultant on the board of NewAge Beverages from 2017-2020. Dr. Kapteyn has gained recognition for his skills in minimally invasive ultrasound guided procedures, including carpal tunnel release and trigger finger releases, as well as TenJet for elbow tenotomy, hip, shoulder, and achilles tendon. In addition to spinal injections, Dr Kapteyn performs procedures such as basi-vertebral nerve ablation, interspinous vertiflex for spinal stenosis, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, kyphoplasty and radiofrequency ablation. He performs neurolytic blocks for sympathetic nerve pain, and he is also experienced with pain pumps, Botox treatments, including for migraine prophylaxis, prolotherapy, orthobiologics, for both chronic tendon and joint pain, and Biote for bio-identical hormone optimization.
Dr. Kapteyn has numerous contributions to medical research. including NIH research on neurophysiological correlates in chronic stroke patients. He also served as a lead investigator for the PUGET study, which examined the outcomes of tenotomies for medial and lateral epicondylitis. He participated in CITRUS
study with SonexHealth, observing outcomes of ultrasound guided carpal tunnel release. Furthermore, he participated in research on a novel migraine prophylactic treatment for chronic migraine headaches with Healthy Extracts, publishing “A Unique medium chain triglyceride-containing micronutrient complex: Effects on chronic migraine headache”. Dr. Kapteyn’s expertise and compassionate approach to care gained him a reputation of being a “physician’s physician,” as other physicians in the field often consult him for medical advice, guidance and treatment.

A Grand Rapids, MI native, Dr. Kapteyn loves the warm weather and vibrant culture of the nations capital, Washington, DC, and is excited to return. He enjoys ballroom dancing, performing vocally, performing recently with the Williamsburg Symphony, he enjoys both HIIT and tabata exercising, golfing, cooking, gardening and hiking and mountain biking. He has three college-aged daughters and was married to Nancy Kapteyn for 25 years until she passed away from breast cancer. In her memory, Dr. Kapteyn encourages contributions to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Alexander Behnaz, MD, NP, is a dual-boarded interventional pain specialist and physiatrist.
