Toryn grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, where he developed a passion for movement and athletics through playing football and soccer. He earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Mississippi before completing his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine in Austin, Texas, graduating in 2025.
Toryn is passionate about orthopedic and sports rehabilitation and takes an individualized, evidence-based approach to care. He integrates manual therapy with progressive strengthening and movement retraining to help patients reduce pain, improve performance, and confidently return to their daily activities, sports, and hobbies.
He is committed to helping individuals build strength, move efficiently, and maintain long-term physical health regardless of their age or activity level. Outside of work, Toryn enjoys following Ole Miss athletics, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.
Joseph Clingan is a dedicated Physical Therapist Assistant, combining a strong foundation in healthcare with a diverse professional background. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Arts from Abilene Christian University, he brings excellent communication, empathy, and motivational skills to patient care. His hands-on experience managing teams and coordinating projects has equipped him with the organizational and interpersonal strengths vital in clinical environments.
Joseph’s passion for rehabilitation and helping others improve their mobility and quality of life has guided his transition into the physical therapy field. He is committed to lifelong learning and looks forward to making a meaningful impact in the world of physical therapy.
Sonja grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota and after many years of competitive Irish dance she was motivated to work in the field of physical therapy. She received her Associates degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Anoka-Ramsey Community College in 2018. She worked for two years for a short-term rehab care facility in south Minneapolis, then returned to school to finish her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa. After graduating in spring of 2022, she and her husband Joseph relocated to the Austin area.
Sonja is passionate about her role in helping individuals reach their personal goals with physical therapy and loves watching her patients’ confidence grow through the rehabilitation process. She enjoys coming up with creative ways to make PT fun and finds it an incredibly rewarding field of work.
Outside the clinic, Sonja enjoys teaching Irish dance, reading, crocheting, listening to music & podcasts, playing the piano, watching sports, staying in touch with her friends and family back in the Midwest, working out, and exploring the Austin area with her husband.
Laura is a native Texan from Clear Lake, a suburb of Houston. As a doctor’s daughter, she grew up understanding the value of patient care and the importance of health restoration. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology while simultaneously competing as an All-American collegiate swimmer. Laura also has a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Washington and a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. She is a Certified Manual Therapist and Licensed Athletic Trainer.
Early in her career, Laura was involved in working with athletes including serving as a Student Athletic Trainer at The University of Texas at Austin with the Longhorn Football team. Throughout her career, she has worked with patients ranging from professional athletes to geriatrics. Laura has committed her career to helping people return to the activities they love.
Practicing what she preaches, she loves to exercise and participate in various activities like hiking, swimming, and cycling. She has participated in numerous marathons, triathlons, soccer tournaments, and cycling events. In her free time, you will likely find Laura either spending time with family and friends, mountain biking, camping, watching Longhorn sports, or volunteering with her Divine Canines therapy dog.
Mattye was raised in San Marcos Texas and active in sports and athletics all her life. She went on to earn her B.S. in Exercise Science from West Texas A&M, where she was a member of the nationally ranked Lady Buff golf team. Mattye then went on to graduate with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University in 2021. In the clinic, she is most passionate about getting individuals back to their sports or hobbies and increasing quality of life through movement. Mattye enjoys helping people of all ages build confidence in their physical ability and knowledge of their bodies. Mattye is planning on pursuing specializations in sport Orthopedics, Titleist Performance Institute and Manual Therapy. She joined Austin Sports Medicine in 2022.
Outside of work, Mattye enjoys going outdoors and being active. She is often found at the golf course, playing recreational sports, hanging out with friends or wrangling cattle at her family’s working ranch in west Texas
A native of San Antonio, Jim Fernandez, MD, is a board-certified specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. At Austin Sports Medicine, with locations in Austin, Bee Cave, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville, Texas, he provides expert, nonsurgical care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions using conservative therapies designed to alleviate pain and restore function.
Dr. Fernandez completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas before earning his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and El Paso in 1997. He went on to complete a residency in PM&R at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he honed his expertise in the comprehensive treatment of musculoskeletal issues.
As a physiatrist, Dr. Fernandez specializes nonsurgical solutions, treating all musculoskeletal issues, including neck and back, with conservative therapies. His areas of expertise include performing electromyography (EMG) and nerve studies to diagnose neuromuscular conditions, as well as providing interventional spine injections for targeted pain relief and improved mobility.
Before joining Austin Sports Medicine, Dr. Fernandez practiced in the Dallas area for five years, gaining extensive experience in managing a wide range of physical medicine cases.
