Perimenopausal symptoms prompted me to schedule an appointment with my OB/GYN. Due to an "atypia" breast lump removal, I learned that I was not a candidate for HRT & that my only option was to take something to help with night sweShow moreats. I had simultaneously scheduled a consult with Dr. Sophocles after finding the practice on the on the North American Menopause Society, and almost cancelled it because I assumed that there was little that could be done to improve my situation. I am so relieved that I kept the appointment because Dr. Sophocles and staff are exceptional, she truly is a menopause specialist. It was a very different experience than a typical OB/GYN visit. She is GYN only which means her focus is women's sexual health. Her bedside manner is only surpassed by her competency and expertise. Not only did she address my key menopause symptoms but also, offered multiple treatment options for each. I felt valued, understood, and respected and look forward to feeling like myself again under her care.
All of the staff, including Dr. Matthews were friendly and created a comfortable environment. After a very brief discussion, Dr. Matthews and I decided on a medication that she would prescribe, but she didn’t even tell me the nameShow more of it, and I didn’t realize that until after I left. She just told me what kind of pill it was. I went to my pharmacy later that day to pick it up and they didn’t even have anything on record of the prescription being sent over. Dr. Matthews didn’t go over the instructions for taking the pill, which again I didn’t realize until after the visit. I have taken similar ones before so I guess she assumed I knew, but I still feel like she should have gone over it with me, especially since this is a different one and is taken slightly differently, based on what I’ve read online. Overall an okay visit, but I’m going to have to call the office to see what happened to my prescription
Maria Sophocles, MD, FACOG, NCMP is a board-certified OB/GYN with more than 25 years of medical experience. She is the Medical Director of Women’s Healthcare of Princeton, a progressive and innovative women’s health practice in Princeton, NJ.
Dr. Sophocles understands the spectrum of issues women face from their teens through post-menopause. “Women of any age want a physician they can trust,” Dr. Sophocles says. “I spend time with my patients so they can share intimate issues and complex problems.”
After graduating with an honors degree in English from Duke University, Dr. Sophocles earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She completed her residency training at Johns Hopkins /Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She promoted early development of umbilical cord blood banks and researched non-invasive ways to detect abnormal fetal chromosomes. Today, Dr. Sophocles focuses on advancing non-invasive, non-hormonal gynecological procedures to treat vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and lichen sclerosus.
Dr. Sophocles is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the North American Menopause Society, and the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. She is a fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is a certified menopausal specialist, and a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease.
In early 2015, Dr. Sophocles was one of the first physicians to utilize laser for the treatment of vaginal dryness and lichen sclerosus. She teaches and trains physicians nationally and internationally and is a sought-after opinion leader on issues of menopause and female sexual dysfunction.
She is married with four children and resides in Princeton.

I finally found a OBGYN that I feel Dr.Sophocles
Very compassionate snd does not give up
The first visit with Dr. Sophocles was wonderful. She clearly knew how to calm me and explain what she would be doing step by step. She performed a thorough exam and presented a plan of management for me. She has an excellent knowledge base of the specialty and has Incorporated state of the art technology to provide care to patients. The support staff are very pleasant, working with each other creating a pleasant environment. I am so pleased to have had the opportunity become a patient of Dr.Sophocles.
