Fantastic experience! Front desk staff was welcoming and greeted me to let me know they’d be with me as soon as possible which I appreciated. Staff in the back was sweet and welcoming. Dr. Shields was so incredibly kind and I loved the way she explained everything in a way that it made perfect sense. Tara Shields, OD, is a highly experienced and skilled doctor of optometry at Antelope Valley Optometric Center in Lancaster, California. Dr. Shields earned her undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She then went on to earn her doctorate degree at the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton, California.
In 2007 Dr. Shields relocated to the Antelope Valley, and she’s been a proud member of the community ever since. When Dr. Shields isn’t busy with her work, she enjoys family time with her husband and four children.

Dr. Shields is AMAZING. Besides her knowledge and her positive and caring vibe, what sets her apart from many other optometrists is her “equality based” collaborative approach. She values feedback, and she treats you as an equal. She never dismisses questions, and more importantly, she is NEVER dismissive! She will take the time to explain everything and make sure you are comfortable. Additionally, the diagnostic equipment available at AVOC is state of the art. My optomologist’s office isn’t even as well equipped, and he has a very large practice! I wear multifocal contacts and have a stigmatism & a growing cataract in one of my eyes, therefore the way I test may not be the RX that works for me in real life. She and I went through many trials in the office until we found the probable sweet spot. But she also fully understands that there may still be more tweaking when they are tested in real life, therefore I was also sent home with more trials for my problem eye, so we know the RX chosen will be the best one for me. The only criticism I have for AVOC is that their collection of frames is way too small (comparatively) and a little pricey, but they DO carry a large selection of frameless Silhouettes. I highly recommend Dr. Shields! You just can’t do any better than her!
Frankly I only came around this place because of my VSP app. Personally I wouldn’t have come here on my own, as a matter of fact, I thought this lot was just a lot. When I got there I kind of wanted to turn back and go somewhere else because the parking lot seems very run down and the outside of the building looks very old as well. BUT!!! The staff is great, the service was great, I was given amazing service. But the place definitely desperately needs some renovations. This is the type of “dont judge a book by its cover” would I come back? Unsure to be honest, love the service but not the building.
