He owned and worked as the senior optometrist at two separate practices in San Francisco and Alameda, California before selling both practices and retiring to Mazatlan, Mexico. Additionally, since 1991, Dr. Matthews has volunteered as a staff optometrist for the Hospital del la Familia in Guatemala.
