Got questions for
Dr. Amy Rein, PHD?
I’m Amy Rein, PhD, a licensed psychologist and the founder of Rein Center, an integrative psychology and psychiatry practice based in Iowa City, Iowa. With over 27 years of clinical experience, I specialize in trauma therapy, anxiety, depression, and nervous system regulation using a deeply integrative, body-based approach.
I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families across Iowa, Colorado, Florida, New York, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and British Columbia, and I provide telehealth services throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck in their thoughts, or disconnected from themselves. They may understand why they feel the way they do, yet still find their symptoms persist. My work is grounded in the understanding that lasting healing happens not only through insight, but through the nervous system and the body.
I use a trauma-informed, nervous system–based approach that works both top-down and bottom-up. We address thoughts, emotions, and meaning while also working directly with the body to restore regulation, safety, and capacity. Rather than pushing people to relive painful experiences, I focus on helping the system feel safe enough to process and release what it has been holding—at a pace that is respectful and sustainable.
From this perspective, symptoms such as anxiety, depression, panic, or emotional reactivity are not signs that something is “wrong” with you. They are often adaptive responses to stress, trauma, or early relational experiences. Therapy becomes a collaborative process of listening to these signals and allowing the mind and body to reorganize in ways that support healing.
My work integrates evidence-based and experiential approaches, including:
These approaches are integrated thoughtfully and guided by pacing, attunement, and what your nervous system can tolerate.
As therapy progresses, many clients report:
While symptom relief is important, my deeper goal is to help people reconnect with their authentic or true self—an embodied sense of clarity, vitality, and inner knowing that often becomes obscured by trauma and chronic stress.
My style is active, collaborative, and attuned. I offer clear explanations, practical tools, and consistent feedback, while paying close attention to pacing and safety. Early in the work, we develop a personalized treatment plan to support meaningful and lasting change.

excellent
Dr. McCormick is insightful and genuinely caring. She is a knowledgeable, out-of the box thinker with a holistic approach. I feel both heard and inspired every time that I see her. Highly recommend her!
Wonderful service and care.
Dr. McCormick has worked tirelessly to manage my weird side effects, while treating debilitating depression, and caring for me as a a whole person, always addressing the full picture.
I’m so grateful for Dr Rein! She has helped me get rid of a lifetime of trauma through her expertise in EMDR! My life would not be the same without her!
Dr. McCormick has been an outstanding asset to my mental health.
Amazing, is an understatement. A very " non - clinical " , welcoming atmosphere upon arrival. Dr.McCormick conveys a very sincere, trusting aura that allows me to be open and honest about myself, and one does not have the feeling of being judged or " pre- diagnosed " . I can definitely, without reservation, recommend seeing Dr.McCormick for helping navigate this not so smooth road of life we travel.
Just from my first appointment -- Dr. McCormick is an incredible doctor! Very holisitic in nature and compassionate. Extremely smart and thorough. i look forward to working with Dr. McCormick more in upcoming sessions.

Successfully writing to address issues of anxiety and depression.
Absolute treasure to find and attentive to an individual's needs with beneficial advice.
Today was my first ever experience with therapy. Even in my first session I felt heard. I'm eager to see how sessions continue to allow me to have tools and strategies to cope with life.
Really listens to me. Pushes me but not too much and consistently checks in during sessions
It has been easy to make my appointment & access forms. I had no problems getting on zoom & my appointment started promptly at the scheduled time. I found my therapist easy to talk to about issues that I have been having. This is a good sign for the first visit.
Shannon is very attentive to my concerns and often asks me to share some experiences that seem to affect me.
Very caring and helpful
Best decision I ever made
Shannon has been excellent and very helpful/supportive. For the first time in a long while I feel I am making progress on the changes and improvements I would like to make as a direct result of Shannon’s guidance.
Shannon is incredible! She allows me to have a safe and open discussion, wherever that might take us! Very thankful.
I wholeheartedly love the safe space Shannon provides me. I am allowed to be my most vulnerable authentic self and she shows up for me without judgment, rather with compassion and understanding. I am provided tools to support me in my transition to a healthy mental space, sharing how the tools are working for me or when I am struggling. I wish everyone had the opportunity to be fully human without judgment and simultaneously be equipped with strategies to help them grow to a healthy and happy state of being.
Of several therapists, Dr. Rein is by far the best. EMDR and the counseling relationship has broken the tight hold that shame has had on my life.
