About Amy Wickman, MD
Amy Wickman, MD, is an experienced spine specialist with the team at Alta Orthopaedics, with locations in Solvang, Santa Barbara, and Oxnard, California. In the midst of the complexity of spine surgery, Dr. Wickman puts patients and their families in the foreground. Having dealt with sick family members as well as with her own orthopaedic issues, she knows how important it is for patients to feel validated, to feel that they are heard, and for the doctor to be able to see the situation from the patient’s perspective.
Dr. Wickman became a doctor because she wanted to help people have better health. She completed her undergraduate degree in urban planning at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, before graduating with her medical degree from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago. It was there that she developed her love of spine surgery during her five-year residency, training at a Level 1 Trauma Center, the Hines VA, and the Shriners Hospital for Children. She dealt with everything from traumatic spine and spinal cord injuries to treating children with scoliosis and adults with degenerative conditions such as herniated discs.
Her education and training in orthopaedic surgery allows her to see issues from a broader perspective, to look at the whole person and identify problems that may not be as obvious as they appear on an MRI. At the same time, she avoids surgery when there are other equally effective solutions.
When it comes to the spine, there may be more than one way to handle a problem. Options may depend on goals and lifestyles as well as medical issues. Dr. Wickman takes time to make sure her patients are aware of all those aspects so that each individual finds the best solution for the circumstances. When possible, she includes family members in decisions about surgery and hospital care. In addition to her busy practice at Alta Orthopaedics, Dr. Wickman is an on-call surgeon for the Emergency Room.
Dr. Wickman is a self-described “city girl” born and raised in Chicago. Now she loves the year-round healthy Santa Barbara lifestyle and understands how important it is for her patients to get back to the activities they enjoy. In college, she was captain of her rowing team. Today, she remains active by running and hiking. In addition to spending time outdoors, Dr. Wickman’s great joy in life is her family – her husband and two children.

Dr Wickman and her staff are wonderful. I’m going to have her do my surgery.
Excellent
The front office seems to be waaay better than in previous visits. The women you have working there were great.
The staff and physicians are excellent. The wait at the office to see the physician or PA was far too long.
Most appreciative of the accommodations!
All though I wasn’t prepared for the pain/recovery, my follow up appointment yesterday went well.
Felt very comfortable with Dr. Wickman very professional and helpful
Although I wasn’t prepared for the pain/recovery. My follow up appointment yesterday went well.
Dr Wickman & her staff are great.
Very professional
I was taken back with the amount of people lined up, like a factory. Certainly what many of us envisioned with socialized medicine. Everything happens fast. I was glad that I was prepared with very quick questions since I could see how little time I would actually have with the doctor.
Honest appraisal of the problem.
Very efficient and professional Phone tree unworkable. Not sure where to leave message for doc.
Dr Wickman listens to you as you describe your issues.
Excellent supporting staff, front desk, X-ray (Miriam)--all very professional, and of course, Dr Wickman, for the very helpful consultation. Although my MRI was not discussed, nor have I seen a thorough MRI review; here's some contextual information to the MRI results interpreted by Charles M. Hubeny, M.D. on 8/03/2022 at 10:15 Background: Patient, a 70-year male, was a laminectomy fusion patient (L-4/5 fused) in 1983 as a result of a then diagnosed Spondylolisthesis condition. After healing he has lived an active life with no adverse recurrence since, nor evidence of any physical limitation until July 2022. On 29 July, after back pain induced by “severe” golf swinging on 17 July, Franciose received an interarticular facet joint injection by Dr David Pires, an Osteopathic pain specialist. Following that treatment for back strain, the present MRI was ordered to diagnose a possible disc issue. Since 4 August, the patient has been pain-free, again sleeping restfully, hiking in the mountains, driving extensively (to & from Mammoth), and exercising aggressively via interval weight training. I would appreciate if Dr Wickman could share her diagnosis with the Neurosurgery office of Dr. Jones. I will be visiting Dr. Chung next Tuesday, 16 August at noon. Also I received no report from Dr. Wickman. May I request her written opinion and the MRI report be sent to my email: [email protected] Thank you
It was great. Fast. Fair & Friendly
Caring thoughtful professional and honest, you can depend on Alta Orthopedic
I wld say a 4.5 if i cld...Very clinical visit today, would give it a 5, but all of my other visits had been so stellar, i know it was just an off day. But my questions were answered in full. I think it was an end of the day visit and there was a lot going on with me as well. She handled/answer all of my questions and was able to get me a pamphlet I didn't have before for my upcoming neck surgery in about 2 wks. I know she's the best spinal/neck surgeon in the Santa Barbara and surrounding areas and came highly recommended. I'm so thankful my insurance works with her Solvang office, as it does not work with her Tax TD through her SB office. I was referred to her by one of my other highly qualified specialists who I would defer to about any possible need that I have. I have now heard her name everywhere and feel no hesitation about having her be my surgeon. Today was just an off day, and there were plenty of things I needed to discuss with her prior to surgery as I had recently had a setback that hopefully will be resolved by surgery date. I'd you think you need a 2nd opinion, get it with her, but if you're new at deciding, make your appointment here with Dr. Amy Wickman. You will be in the best hands possible. K.M. Scarfe
