Welcome! I’m Jessica Muñoz, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Clinical Supervisor with nearly 15 years of clinical experience specializing in trauma, sexual assault, and the management of related symptoms. Based in New York City’s Flatiron and NoMad districts, I work with survivors of sexual assault and coercive control, as well as adults managing anxiety or depression.
I believe therapy, much like the gym, is about leaning into a regular practice—showing up week after week and putting in the work, regardless of mood. As a proud first-generation immigrant and serious advocate for ending gender-based violence, I aim to decolonize the therapeutic experience by honoring both my clients’ and my own cultural identities in our work together. My approach includes somatic, or body-focused, interventions to address trauma stored in the body and invite the mind back to the body (embodiment). I offer EMDR therapy for those ready to do deep trauma work and heal at the root. I also frequently draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) frameworks, which are particularly useful for addressing numbing and addictive behaviors often associated with the management of PTSD and CPTSD symptoms.
As a visible survivor of gender-based violence, I have personally experienced the transformative power of embodiment techniques. As a scholar-practitioner, I am committed to advancing the field by collecting quantitative data, including measuring stress responses through Hair Cortisol Levels (HCL), to develop evidence-based practices that ethically support survivors. Outside of the therapy room, you can find me engaging in Trauma-Informed Strength Training™ and Trauma-Informed Boxing™ as much as I can get it in! With 15 years of clinical rigor, I’ve worked across the spectrum of mental health settings—from psychiatric inpatient hospitals and the neurological ICU to manning triage at New York’s highest-volume emergency department and providing direct, face-to-face care in community mental health settings. I love being outside, talking with the people of New York, and keep this up in my advocacy work. Atypically identifying as a visible survivor in the field of trauma-informed care, I believe deeply in survivor leadership—the reinvestment, respect, and intellectual credit for lived experience and cultural expertise. If you’re seeking a compassionate, trauma-informed therapist to help you heal and grow, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
