Most often people are nice but being a behavioral science management specialist I can see where improvements can be trained better. Lastly, I do wish that more solutions would be explored. I honestly feel like most doctors it is Show moreeasier to prescribe what their use to instead of following the FDA more closely each month (not waiting until they send info) but to actively explore options and not that of doctor comfort. I also feel the NPs could have more delegating and writing authority. It also doesn’t always feel that they meet formally regarding processes and patient treatment plans. On a positive note most and I do mean most not all, the staff are respectful and courteous. People in pain are different kind of patient. It still it is very often and obvious that black patients are treated differently as if all want to be drug addicts or something. They are often given less care, concern and treatment. I also feel patients should be treated as individuals not a one size fits all and prescribe what people need by interpreting the FDA refs and recommendations as written not often not the same treatment. There are often recommendations interpreted as regulations. I don’t feel that a doc should go against regulations but certainly should prescribe what people need. And investigate more options for patients as individuals. After saying all that I do feel I have a good relationship with the office staff, the NP and certainly with the doc. Most often I do believe he listens. I enjoy him as part of my health management team. Oh there is one other thing. While I am generally treated for my back and neuropathy I not too long ago had a knee replacement. While my med regime helps with the aforementioned health issue it does nothing for my pain from knee replacement. Since the surgeon does not want to prescribe pain meds since I’m out of the hospital and under a pain management plan from a different doctor I don’t get any relief from my knee. Personally if this were my patient and learning this info I would have no doubt been on the phone having a conversation with both doctors to see if there could be a plan to deal with this problem. Sorry about so much info but I wanted to make my concerns undoubtedly clear. HAPPY HOLIDAYS and I do give praise to the INNOVATIVE STAFF
Life saver! I have been dealing with pain for so many years that literally, I trained my brain and body to tolerate without complaining . By the time I reached Dr Oppong, I tried 5 other physicians who were not good listeners, werShow moree judgmental because I had no outside facial expressions of the amount of pain I actually was in. I also had physicians who were only concerned with the money that the insurance company could pay for their service and not me the patient who was enduring unimaginable pain. Dr Oppong changed my entire feelings toward not given up on finding real help. He literally changed my life. I now wake up in the morning without the fear of falling, without the fear of pain and with utter belief that I am finally blessed with someone who could help. Was I hesitant? Absolutely. Was i purposefully trying to get him to show up like the rest of them? Absolutely! I wanted, needed and demanded real help. For the first time after the doctor that helped me walk again that retired, did I find GOD'S Angel. I am that person that will write reviews based on my experiences because everyone going through getting help, needs honesty, a real life voice to speak the truth so they can make valuable decisions. I can’t tell you that your experience will end the same as mine but if I can bring you hope and truth to assist in your decision, I will give you the valuable information to make your critical decisions, when we speak in terms of health. The icing on the cake, is the wonderful respectable staff working along side him. They all genuinely care with sympathy and concerns. No waiting for months to only hear excuses why it's been six months and no follow through. Horrible experiences I too endured. I didn't want to share at first because I didn't want Dr Oppong to get overwhelmed by patience that it takes from my care however, I know what it is like searching for Doctors that genuinely care and take the time to hear you and not dismiss you and your pain. Joseph Oppong, Jr., MD, is a board-certified physician who specializes in pain medicine and anesthesiology at Innovative Pain Solutions Centers, with offices in Bowie, Salisbury, and Laurel, Maryland.
Dr. Oppong graduated summa cum laude from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, and earned his medical degree from the revered Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore before deciding that he wanted to continue his education in pain management.
Under the supervision of J.C. Rowlingson, MD, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on chronic pain management, Dr. Oppong completed a fellowship in interventional pain management at the University of Virginia Health Systems in Charlottesville, Virginia.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Oppong worked at St. Agnes Healthcare in Baltimore, where he established Community Pain Management, a clinic that follows a multidisciplinary approach to managing chronic pain. He went on to co-found Fairwood Spine and Pain Center, P.A. in Bowie, Maryland, where he spent four years serving as the practice’s president. To better serve his patients in an ever-changing medical field, Dr. Oppong opened Innovative Pain Solutions Centers in 2014.
Dr. Oppong follows a philosophy of patient care that emphasizes compassion as a means for restoring function and improving the quality of life in his pain patients. He’s highly skilled in a number of intervention techniques, including joint injections, sympathetic nerve blocks, intrathecal (spinal) pain pumps, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, percutaneous disc decompression, discography, nerve radiofrequency ablations, facet blocks, and epidural injections (both interlaminar and transforaminal approaches).
He also advocates using ultrasound-guidance for interventional pain procedures because of its ability to avoid the radiation exposure inherent in using a traditional C-arm (X-ray) machine.
Dr. Oppong stays active in his field as a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Outside of his medical interests, he’s a dedicated sports fan, especially with soccer and football, and likes to travel with his family and absorb new cultures and cuisines.

This is the first time I have met this doctor. Being in pain management since February 2007 month after month due to numerous injuries, birth defects, and other issues. I Really Like this Doctor just as I did my past doctors. He was Very Attentive and was intrigued on just how much my body has gone through over my lifetime. I am looking forward to my next appointment and may bring some of my past medical records. Though it may take up too much of his time for other patients and the WONDERFUL STAFF!! LOL!!
