Dr. Melissa Mercado joined Nirvana Healthcare Management Services (NHMS) in 2022 as a family medicine physician at the Roseville Medical Society (RMS) location. After earning her master’s degree in biomedical sciences (MS) at Rutgers University (Newark), Dr. Mercado received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO) from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (Stratford, NJ) in 2018. She completed her residency in family medicine at CarePoint Health Christ Hospital (Jersey City) in the summer of 2021. She is a native Spanish speaker.
Dr. Mercado is Board-Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ABOFP) and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). Professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP); the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP); and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Dr. Mercado is certified to treat both pediatric and adult patients. She also conducts and evaluates preventative health examinations for women. She is passionate about patient education relating to various acute and chronic conditions. Whenever it is deemed appropriate, she implements osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Through continual and candid communications with her patients, she has established meaningful, long-term relationships with them.
When asked to “describe your Nirvana experience,” the first word that comes to mind is “family.” Dr. Mercado feels that all staff members benefit from the collaborative spirit that is evident among individuals and departments. Regarding a particularly meaningful experience at Nirvana, Dr. Mercado recalls a patient who recently came to her with diabetes, which had remained uncontrolled for several years. After educating her patient about its causes, long-term effects, and the measures that can effectively control this chronic disease, her patient is now successfully managing her condition. “This outcome exemplifies the effectiveness of patient education and ongoing communications between the physician and her patient.”
Sarah J. Shah, DNP, APN, A-GNP-C is a board certified and doctorally prepared nurse practitioner who specialized in adult-gerontology primary care. She graduated as Summa cum laude, was honored with academic excellence, and as a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society from Rutgers School of Nursing in May 2022. She is dedicated to practicing holistic and preventative care for improved quality and longevity of life. Also, she is passionate about patient empowered healthcare and advocates for patients as a whole person rather than as defined by their diseases.

Board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Santos combines the personal attention of the traditional small-town doctor with an evidence-based approach to modern medicine. He focuses on preventing illness and maintaining your good health.
Dr. Santos received an undergraduate degree, with honors, from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. He went on to study medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical school in Newark, where he received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism Award and the Dean Brown Award for significant student contributions to the school. He continued on at Rutgers for his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics and was further honored to receive the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.
Dr. Santos is affiliated with the Chilton Medical Center, located in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, part of the Atlantic Health System. He also has an academic appointment as clinical preceptor at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York.
His calming demeanor, even in an emergency, puts patients’ minds at ease and is why he received both the “Physician We Admire Award” and the “New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Doc” distinction. Dr. Santos is responsive to your questions and takes the time to explain what’s happening during an appointment. He speaks Tagalog and Spanish.
Dr. Ritu Sharma’s extensive medical training enables her to provide quality, compassionate medical care for your entire family. Dr. Sharma enjoys educating her patients, as well as sharing tips on how to prevent common illnesses. She served her residency at the University Hospital, also in Newark, and later served as the Chairperson for the Department of Pediatrics at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, New Jersey.
Dr. Sharma has received numerous accolades, including the Golden Apple Award from the Class of 2009 New Jersey Medical School, the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009, and the Physicians We Admire Award from the nursing staff at Chilton Medical Center in 2012. She speaks Hindi and Spanish. Dr. Sharma welcomes residents living in and around Jersey City, New Jersey, to DRS Medical Associates.
