Dr. Koidahl first thought about specializing in geriatrics, but that changed when she participated in the Rural Physician Assistance Program and did her OB/GYN rotation at Bemidji Hospital, now called Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. 

“I was the only medical student there, so I got to assist with all the deliveries and surgeries,” she says, “I remember thinking, ‘This is by far the coolest thing in medicine.’ I knew it was what I wanted to do.”

In 2012 Dr. Koidahl traveled to the Philippines on a medical mission trip. They performed gynecologic surgeries 10 hours a day, in a hot operating room, with women lined up down the street. They made a massive difference in these people's lives, and they were so grateful. It was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Dr. Koidahl describes herself as a take-charge person but also calm in high-pressure situations and a good listener. She feels it’s essential to put yourself in your patient’s shoes and help make decisions that are best for them.

“Taking care of her and advocating for her led to my decision to become a doctor,” says Dr. Koidahl. “I wanted to be charged with people’s care. My grandma was one of the biggest influences in my life.”

Liz Crandall, MD, is a board-certified Physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Southdale ObGyn. The practice has two locations with offices in Edina and Burnsville, Minnesota.

She earned her Bachelor of Science at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, followed by her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) in Minneapolis. Dr. Crandall always wanted to be a doctor and presumed she would attend medical school. Self-aware, she knew she wasn’t a salesperson and exclaimed, “I couldn't sell you shoes if you were barefoot!”

She desired a career where she could provide people with something they need and not convince them that they need something when they don’t. She found her calling in medicine and has worked in the health care industry ever since.

Today she enjoys the connections she makes with her patients over the years — delivering their babies, then caring for them through the later stages of life. She enjoys taking care of grandmas, moms, and daughters.

Dr. Crandall believes that reading people and understanding what they want and need is important.

The mother of two daughters, Dr. Crandall, says her perfect day off calls for a skinny vanilla latte, a massage, and time spent simply watching water — the river flow, the waves of the lakes, or the cascade of Minnehaha Falls. “Watching water relaxes me,” she says with a smile.

She also enjoys needlepoint, a skill that enhances her talent in the operating room. She is very precise with her stitches.

Annalise Almdale, MD, is a board-certified Physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Southdale ObGyn. The practice has two locations with offices in Edina and Burnsville, Minnesota.

She received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, followed by a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Indiana-Indianapolis (IUPUI). She completed her residency at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale.

Dr. Almdale firmly believes that there must be an overarching trust between a doctor and a patient. Because if there isn't trust in a relationship, it won't be very fruitful.

She feels blessed to have patients trust her. She understands a gynecological visit is not something people look forward to. So, if she can get to know a little more about them and build trust, it helps. She says, “When patients are comfortable enough to hug me and almost welcome me into their family, I feel like I’ve made a difference.” 

Her goal is to help patients be the best person they can be — in health and other areas of life.

Recently married and new to Minnesota, Dr. Almdale is settling into her life with yoga, walking her dog, hiking, and exploring her new state. The oldest of three sisters, it’s no surprise she pursued medicine. She is a third-generation physician, following her grandfather, both parents, and OBGYN uncles. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling.

Dr. Lindsay Lewis, MD, is a skilled physician at Southdale ObGyn. The practice has two locations with offices in Edina and Burnsville, Minnesota. 

She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Minnesota in Twin Cities, followed by her Doctor of Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota, Hennepin County Medical Center, Regions Hospital, and Methodist Hospital.

She is the second ObGyn physician in her family. Her older sister practices out-of-state. “I had many mentors—including my sister and in my residency—who were female leaders. It was a wonderful program. I also played soccer when I was young and am a huge fan of the Women’s World Cup. Young, confident, successful women have always inspired me.”

Dr. Lewis specializes in high-risk obstetrics, contraception, and minimally invasive gynecology. She’s interested in robotics and gained training and valuable experience during her residency in laparoscopy. She says, “It can provide a less invasive option” for diagnostics and surgery of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus.”

No two pregnancies or births are the same, and Dr. Lewis is well-prepared to support patients through the physical and emotional journey of pregnancy and high-risk obstetrics.

“I want to establish an open and trusting environment for my patients—no concern is too small,” says Dr. Lindsay Lewis. Of course, she also remembers being a 15-year-old. 

“I would not have been comfortable talking about women’s health issues – even with my doctor. Now I realize our doctors will not judge you for anything you say. Start a conversation. We need more voices and conversations to spotlight women’s health and normalize the conversation. It all starts with being open and trusting. Don’t be afraid.”

She enjoys reading, biking around the lakes, theatre, and traveling when she's not in the office. But she is most passionate about the Vikings! Could that be because her dad played for them?

Rachel Harris, MD, is a board-certified Physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Southdale ObGyn. The practice has two locations with offices in Edina and Burnsville, Minnesota. 

Dr. Harris obtained her undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, followed by her Doctor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She completed residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For Dr. Harris, being an OB/GYN is a natural fit. Her first medical school rotation was surgery. She didn’t think she’d like surgery but enjoyed it and OB/GYN was even better because she loves working in a clinic and getting to know patients personally. She says, “it’s the perfect blend of primary care and surgery.”

Her decision to become a physician came from her love of science and her aunt, Dr. Garnet Harris, a family practice physician whom she shadowed for a few weeks during college.

Dr. Harris describes herself as empathetic and energetic, driven, and down-to-earth. She is good at listening to what’s going on with her patients and respects that they have an integral role in their health care.

She believes in balancing life and being whole, so when she shows up at work, she can be there 100 percent. She feels so fortunate to have women come to her for their care. It is an honor, and she’s grateful that this is her job.

Dr. Harris likes to read, run, and try new things in her spare time — from dance lessons (West Coast Swing) to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Steve, and their two children.

Dr. Meschke can’t remember when she didn’t want to be a doctor. She first thought she wanted to be in pediatrics but changed her mind after her OB/GYN rotation in medical school. “I found that I just loved taking care of women,” she says, “And that’s what I still like best about it.”

Today Dr. Meschke enjoys caring for women of all ages. “My day ranges from seeing an 80-year-old woman with prolapse issues to a teenager who’s nervous about her first pap smear,” she says. “There isn’t one age I like more.”

She and her husband, Andy, have twin girls and a son. Both pregnancies were high-risk, and Meschke says the support she received at work is what any patient can expect at the practice. “The people here really care about people,” she says. “The nurses remember who you are and are excited to see you. That supportive feeling permeates the place.”

“Our son has had some health problems, and we’ve been thrust into the other side of medicine, which has shown me how important it is to let your patients know that you care about them. Sometimes all people need is to feel like they’re not alone.”

Wanda P. Adefris, MD, FACOG, is a compassionate and dedicated OB/GYN physician, surgeon and a founding partner of Adefris & Toppin Women’s Specialists, M.D.P.C., in Woodbury, Minnesota. She is an expert in a wide range of OB/GYN services and has come to be well-loved by both her patients and colleagues alike. 

Dr. Adefris earned her undergraduate degree at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, before moving on to Temple University in Philadelphia, where she obtained her medical degree. Following medical school, Dr. Adefris completed both her internship and residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Callahan grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, before moving on to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, for her undergraduate studies. After spending a year in Washington, DC, conducting clinical research, Dr. Callahan decided to continue her education, completing medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Following medical school, Dr. Callahan went to Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana, for her OB/GYN residency.

Dr. George is originally from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology/Pre-Medicine at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She stayed at UW-Madison where she then completed her Doctor of Medicine. After graduation, she moved back north to the Twin Cities to be closer to family. She has loved exploring and getting to know the Twin Cities area so far. Outside of the office, Dr. George also enjoys traveling, hiking, trying new restaurants, and going to see musicals at the theater.
