Dr. Kristen Keener, AuD is an expert Audiologist who specializes in the treatment of tinnitus and other sound sensitivity disorders at the IlluminEar Tinnitus & Audiology Center in Austin, Texas. Trusted and valued by all of her patients, Dr. Keener has over eighteen years of experience treating patients with such serious sound sensitivities as hyperacusis and misophonia across Texas, including Austin.
Dr. Keener’s Education and Experience
Dr. Keener earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Indiana University in 1994. Two years later, she received her Master’s Degree in Audiology from Purdue University and went on to gain her Doctorate in Audiology from A.T. Still University in 2007. Dr. Keener’s training focused on a wide field of expertise, including such categories as assessing hearing loss, conserving hearing ability and providing treatment for a number of hearing disorders.
As a member of a number of professional Audiological Associations, Dr. Keener has become a valued member of her professional community over her nearly two-decade long career. Just a few of her industry associations include being a member of the Texas Academy of Audiology, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology and the American Academy of Audiology, among others. Dr. Keener is also privileged to be one of the few Audiologists in the entire country to be trained in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. This relatively new method of treating Tinnitus has shown a success rate of more than 80%, and Dr. Keener received her training directly from the neuroscientist who developed the therapy.
Her Commitment to Community Involvement
In addition to her professional credentials, Dr. Keener is also committed to educating patients and fellow healthcare providers about the importance of hearing and the factors that can contribute to hearing loss. To better serve her community of Austin, Texas, Dr. Keener founded the IlluminEar Tinnitus & Audiology Center in 2014. IlluminEar is the only diagnostic and rehabilitative Audiology practice in Austin that specializes in such debilitating conditions as tinnitus, as well as sound sensitivity disorders.

Dr. Keener was a patient listener, and I today I felt like there were finally some solutions for my constant tinnitus & mild hearing loss. She took more than enough time to listen to my concerns, answered my questions and gave me a sense of hope. I don't think I can say enough to explain how great this visit went. I would highly recommend her to anyone with tinnitus or hearing loss issues.
Dr. Keener was very professional and was able to connect both with me as an adult parent & my teenage daughter with Misophonia. She was able to give my daughter helpful techniques to decrease her response to triggers as well as introduce us to a small ear piece device that may help my daughter as well. With there being so few professionals that treat Misophonia, it was nice to find one within driving distance from our city. It’s one thing to scour the internet in search of help or to try and “self-treat” with that information (which is sometimes conflicting) and/or from the few books on the subject that are available at this time and a whole different ballgame to sit in the same room with someone who has studied Misophonia and understands the toll that this condition can take on an individual and their family. We left her office feeling hopeful. Office staff is also very friendly.

I have some hearing loss and pretty loud tinnitus. I set up an appointment with Dr. Keener (about 3 weeks out) based on radio testimonials I had heard. Her office was very efficient and e-savvy with reminders, paperwork, etc. She was on time the day of my visit. Her equipment seems state-of-the-art. As a scientist myself, I was able to converse with her as both a lay person and a technical person. The testing was interesting, comprehensive, and with no discomfort of any kind. For me, the results did not indicate a specific hearing aid would help me much, but we did discuss possible self-treatments for tinnitus using white noise and relaxation. There was zero sales pressure. My health insurance would not pre-cover the visit, but he office agreed to submit it anyway and refund any recovery, but even so, the cost was modest, and the information and peace of mind was valuable to me. Overall, a very professional and personal experience. I'm glad I went.
As soon as I walked in to Dr. Keener's office I felt a sense of privacy and that there would be more one on one attention rather than at a large office where you have multiple people coming in and out of the door and doctors are trying to rush through your exam to get to the next one. This is the first time I've seen an Audiologist. Dr Keener was fantastic. She gave me her undivided attention, which as we all know, is rare with doctors! She conducted quite an array of hearing tests (mild hearing loss and tinnitus) and is making recommendations to move forward. I felt like she truly cared. She has given me hope for the first time in years, regarding my ears (haha)!
