About Dr. J. Steven Mathews, MD

Steven Mathews, MD, is an experienced gastroenterologist at Arkansas Gastroenterology Endoscopy Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His specialties include colonoscopy, upper endoscopy (EGD), esophageal dilation, ERCP, PEG placement, capsule endoscopy, internal hemorrhoid banding, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and IBS.

Dr. Mathews graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with a with a Bachelor of Science. He then pursued his medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Afterward, he completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. 

Dr. Mathews moved to Hot Springs in 1994 and has been a practicing gastroenterologist there ever since. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology. Dr. Mathews is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and American College of Physicians. 

Outside of work, Dr. Mathews is a sports enthusiast, specifically SEC college football and basketball.  He also enjoys golf, snow skiing, traveling, and horse racing. He is also an accomplished musician and plays both piano and guitar. He is a Beatles enthusiast, and enjoys collecting vintage musical equipment.
