About Dr. Laurie Mccormick, MD, DFAPA

Laurie McCormick, MD, DFAPA, is a former clinical research scientist and tenure track assistant professor at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She has been board certified in family medicine and is also board certified in Psychiatry since 2004. As a holistic practitioner, she emphasizes the role of biopsychosocial aspects of pathology, and the role of psychological trauma and stress.  She believes in uncovering root causes of illness and distress to help patients better understand and overcome their vulnerabilities. 

 whole person (body, mind, spirit) who blends alternative therapies, functional medicine approaches and not just conventional evidence based medicine (which doesn’t fully capture the complexity of real world illness).  . 

Dr. McCormick believes in the mind-body-spirit connection to treat illness and restore balanced wellness. She is passionate about working with patients who want to learn about the various biological, psychological, and sociological factors that have led to illness states and then working collaboratively with patients to help them not only get better but fully optimize their potential for a full and satisfying life.

Dr. McCormick has 20 years of post-residency experience treating a variety of medical and mental health conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to more specialized conditions such as ADHD, OCD, panic disorder as well as treatment-resistant depression, bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and eating disorders in all age ranges. She is also a distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has conducted research/published several studies to better understand the etiological basis of a variety of mental illnesses. During her 10-year tenure in medical academia at the University of Iowa, she has also been involved in several areas of clinical and research supervision as well as mental health education and advocacy at the local, state, national and international levels. She has been in private practice in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, since 2013 and with the Rein Center in Iowa City since 2018.

Her areas of expertise include treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, OCD as well as LGBTQ, stepfamily, and cultural sensitivity issues.
