At Lotus Integrative Medicine Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Brendan Armm provides an array of Oriental medical services to residents of Los Angeles. His commitment to providing the highest level of care has earned him respect from both patients and peers as one of the leading acupuncturists and Chinese medicinal herbalists in the city.

Dr. Armm is the founder of both Lotus East-West Medical Center and Lotus Integrative Medicine Santa Monica. Holding degrees from both Emperor’s College and Wesleyan University, Dr. Armm was among the first fifty practitioners nationally to have completed a clinical Doctorate in Orthopedics, Pain Management and Integrative Medicine. Dr. Armm is both a California and nationally licensed acupuncturist, a board-certified Chinese medicinal herbalist and acupuncturist, and national Diplomate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Dr. Armm has written for Acupuncture Today and the California Journal of Oriental Medicine, and he holds memberships in the following organizations: the American Acupuncture Council, the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Specialists, and the California State Oriental Medical Association.

Drawing from his extensive knowledge in Eastern medicine, Dr. Armm is able to personally provide a number of services here at Lotus Integrative Medicine Santa Monica. He uses acupuncture and other eastern and western treatment options to help patients who suffer from gastro-intestinal issues or digestive disorders and nutritional issues, back and neck pain, stress and anxiety, fertility and pregnancy, sleep disorders and fatigue, allergies and immune health, hormonal imbalance, headaches and migraines, autoimmune disorders, overall pain management and orthopedics, weight loss, emotional health and wellbeing and many other primary care health concerns.

Growing up in Connecticut, from a family of doctors, Dr. Armm began his medical study by working in the emergency room of Bridgeport, Connecticut’s St. Vincent’s Hospital and conducting research at Yale University School of Medicine. A six-month trip through India, however, transformed his vision for what medicine can do, and he decided to study Oriental medicine. On his way to becoming a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine, Dr. Armm completed a doctoral fellowship at Los Angeles’ Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as an internship at Emperor’s Doctoral Pain Management Clinic, and an externship at Venice Family Clinic.

In addition to practicing Eastern medicine, Dr. Armm is on faculty as a Professor in both the Masters level and Doctoral level medical graduate programs at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica since 2005. He additionally enjoys a daily meditation practice, playing the drums and clarinet, and landscape and abstract watercolors painting. He has additional training in ayurvedic medicine from Mysore, India, in addition to completing a yoga teacher training in 2002, and enjoys the art of aromatherapy and sound therapy. As a parent, Dr. Armm developed a deep interest in holistic early childhood education and development inspired by the Waldorf School program and Rudolph Steiner. He loves traveling and enjoys silent meditation retreats in the United States and abroad. Dr. Armm lives in the Pacific Palisades with his wife and two children.

About Phi-Lan Nguyen, LAc, EAMP

My name is Phi-Lan Nguyen and I am a co-owner and the founder of Zen Attitude. From a very young age, I got to experience the effectiveness of acupuncture through family members and how relaxed and happy they would come away from treatments. At 16, my mother suffered her 3rd and most severe stroke. At this age, I learned very quickly the role of caregiver and also the frustrations of not having enough resources for my mother’s recovery. Within about a year, both Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy had decided that her process had plateaued. She could barely walk, prepare her own food, and would tear up when she couldn’t find the words she was looking for. Our family was told that most stroke survivors make very little recovery after 2 years. This of course did not take into account other modalities such as acupuncture.

It is amazing how even after over 2 decades post stroke, my mother has recovered to the degree that she has today. She is walking, can take care of her basic needs such as showering and eating, can express herself verbally, and could even pick arguments with my father occasionally. I am grateful to Western medicine for saving my mother’s life, and am very grateful to Eastern Asian medicine for increasing her quality of life, as that is the best currency we have.

My focus and passion as an Acupuncturist is to effectively increase that currency called quality of life for patients. Whether I am giving you a tune up, helping you with any chronic or acute issue, working with your other practitioners towards better health, or am the very last option you would have ever considered, I am committed to help you achieve the results you need.

I received my dual Masters of Science degrees in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine from Bastyr University in 2010. I have a particular interest and specialize in neurological conditions such as nerve impingements and sensations, migraines, traumatic brain injury, stroke and Bell’s Palsy, and also any other neurological diseases such as Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s. I spent over 1350 clinical hours at Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Wallingford, Harborview Medical Center in the Chronic Fatigue Clinic, HIV/AIDs clinic, and International Clinic, and Providence Mt St Vincent’s Nursing Center. My last intensive externship was spent at three different hospitals in Shanghai.

I welcome any issue you may be experiencing, as my focus is to treat the person as a whole and not symptomatically. My treatments may include a blend of acupuncture, cupping, dietary advice, coaching, and health education.

All walks of life are absolutely welcome at our office, with no discrimination towards race, religion, sexual and/or gender orientation.

For existing Seattle patients, please call or text the Seattle (206-466-2933) office if you'd like to get on my schedule before I leave for Hawaii!

About Jeffrey Kehoe, ND, LAc, BCB

My journey to medicine began in early 2010 after walking away virtually unscathed from a serious car accident. This profound experience encouraged me to take a closer look at how I was living my life and ultimately led to sobriety through a program of recovery. While this was the most important change I needed to make for my health at that time, I quickly realized it really had nothing to do with alcohol in the bigger picture. In good times or bad, the alcohol was just a symptom for the unhappiness with my spiritual, mental, and physical condition at that time.

Once I was more firmly rooted in recovery, I was ready to look closely at these aspects of my life. I began to focus on areas of need such as nutrition, sleep, movement, self-care, spirituality, and more.  Simple concepts but not always easy to incorporate in our lives for a variety of reasons. Change is not easy, and I’ve been there time and time again.

This shift launched me towards a greater calling in how I could share my experience, strength, and hope with others. There was a desire to be a catalyst for change and help others take advantage of those moments of synchronicity just as others helped me. Truthfully, I stumbled across naturopathic medicine by accident, but I’m not so sure there are coincidences in life anymore. Once at school, personal and professional experiences ultimately led me to acupuncture and Chinese medicine as well.

I love to teach and empower my patients so they feel more confident in taking control of their health. And I always incorporate the nervous system and discussions around the mind-body connection. This is critical because if we always feel like we’re running from a bear, or our body is operating that way without us knowing, we will always be out of balance. From a Chinese medicine perspective, our Yin and Yang will be out of balance. Whichever lens we’re using, we certainly won’t be in a state to promote healing.

I enjoy working and supporting most health conditions especially when it comes to acupuncture. I am particularly passionate about treating mental health concerns, insomnia, chronic pain, digestive issues, and reproductive health. For the last year, I have been focusing primarily on fertility support whether it’s natural conception, IUI, or IVF.

I completed my training at Bastyr University in the greater Seattle area and earned a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) and Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM). Additionally, I am Board Certified in Biofeedback and completed additional training in TCM Psychiatry and Yin Yoga instruction. I am currently studying for the ABORM certification which is the professional designation for acupuncture and traditional Chinese reproductive medicine.

About Emberly Slavin

Emberly Slavin, LAc, is a licensed acupuncturist at Zen Attitude Acupuncture, with offices in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington. Her love of outdoor activities and athletics introduced her unexpectedly to acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) when they helped her recover from a serious sports injury.

Intrigued by holistic care like TCM, Emberly pursued her Master of Science in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, where she also worked as an intern acupuncturist. This gave her the opportunity to attend an externship at the prestigious Shuguang and Longhua hospitals in Shanghai, China. She focused her studies on traumatology, internal medicine, and gynecology and saw that integrating Eastern and Western medicine was not only possible but highly effective.

Emberly strives to improve patients’ quality of life and reach their maximum level of health. She provides acupuncture, electroacupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle and nutritional counseling, and cupping. Her vast knowledge base and clear communication skills enable her to make a true difference in patients’ lives.

When she’s not serving the community from the practice’s Seattle office, Emberly can be found exploring the outdoors, gardening, landscaping, attending music festivals, crafting, or spending quality time with friends and family.
